OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

I don't know why I was thinking of this today, but my mind sometimes takes little side trips without telling me, and just gives me highlights when it comes back.... Chat Icon

What are you thoughts on wearing t-shirts, hats, sweatshirts, etc. with colleges and universities that you've never attended, and nobody close to you has, either.

I have plenty of stuff from the schools I went to, sis, bro, and DW. I even have a few sweatshirts from colleges I don't know about (well known, but I don't know anyone who went there). I didn't buy the non-affiliated clothing, but just wondering if others do buy stuff.

I don't wear shirts that say things though...

I went to UNC Chapel Hill. NO ONE believes me when I wear their gear that I actually went there. Do you know how many people wear their stuff all the time? Just watch a rap video. Chat Icon

So I vote - wear whatever you want.

I had a Yale sweatshirt for years that I wore for working out. I wasn't trying to pretend that I went there. (Well, I did go to the bookstore to get the sweatshirt, but didn't attend classes. Chat Icon)

School stickers on your car for schools you or your child or spouse didn't attend... that's a different story. Chat Icon

What's wrong with Crimson? It's a very nice shade of red. Chat Icon

( I can wear it, based on my own guidelines, since my bro went there....)

I have a Penn State sweatshirt, but I have no idea where I got it from, since I don't know anyone who went there.... Chat Icon It's warm, so I wear it, though.

I would agree with this. I wouldn't have an issue wearing a shirt for a school i didnt' go to (or didn't have a close friend of family member that did either). I don't think it implies you went there or are trying to make it seem like you did. On the other hand - for some reason the car stickers would seem to in my mind.

DH is a huge Notre Dame football fan. Has been since he was a kid. No one in his family went there, but for some reason he and a buddy picked that as their college team. He has ND stuff and I don't think that's odd in the slightest.

Re: OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

When we went visiting colleges when I was in high school, I bought a shirt or sweatshirt at every school we visited. So I say sure, why not? Though now being almost 30 I really only wear the shirts and sweatshirts of the colleges I attended.

he's also is a fan of ND (his uncle used to play football for them) and has quite a few ND shirts.

Re: OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

Personally- I own 1 collge sweatshirt- from a school that I went too- for 1.5 years

I wear it inside out- I hat when people ask questions

the only other thing I own is one of those sweat shirt blankets from my sisters school

I would never wear anything from a school that someone in my family didn't go too- but I am not into wearing college apparel

Re: OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

No one EVER assumes I went to UNC Chapel Hill when I wear their shirts - b/c their basketball team is so popular. (And then if I mention that I DID go there, people are like "yeah, right." Chat Icon

I think it's easier to get away with it without questions if it's a school with a famous team.

I wear USRowing gear (t-shirts, hat and sweatshirt), but I sure as hell wasn't on the US rowing team. (And throughout college I had the decal on my car window. Chat Icon ) I also wear Canadian and Australian rowing gear, but the US team doesn't seem to mind since they got their monies worth out of me. Chat Icon

I wear Army greys, but I'm not, nor was I ever in the Army. My buddies were and that's how I got hooked. The tees are just so damn comfortable, so I would steal their clothes. Chat Icon

Ohhh and then there's my Kings Point sweatwhirt, which is super weathered. I bought it at a football game b/c KP was trying to raise money. It's just so happens to be the perfect fit and weight and I love it.

ETA: Surprisingly, I don't wear anything from the places I did attend.

I rarely wear sweatshirts now & don't have a lot of college sweatshirts left but I always wore shirts/sweatshirts of my sister's, friends' and grandmother's (Go Stonybrook!) colleges.

My husband wears it if it's a team he likes (Penn State)

Re: OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

I went to U of Miami and no one ever believes me if I have a hat or sweatshirt or whatever on - DH went to Grad school at Columbia and people roll their eyes or don't 'believe' him either ........ -

So, I feel like most think it's OK to wear the stuff if you DIDN'T attend the school and are just a fan or whatever - , and if you did actually GO to the school it's like "Oh please ........"

Personally, I could care less - Do you have to be the Yankee's shortstop to wear a Yankee's shirt ?? Ya know ?

It's ok to wear whatever college clothing you want to wear, even if you didn't go there or know anyone who went there.

I'm not a big fan of mixing colleges or wearing too much of the same colleges apparel at the same time - unless attending a sporting event in which that college is participating.

Most of my college clothing is connected to a friend or family member but, I do have a light blue hat from the UNC - Chapel Hill (I got it when I was visiting Chapel Hill to see a friend who lived in the area).

DH has a pair of shorts from Notre Dame because he is a big ND football fan and goes there to visit every couple of years.

When I was younger I had a Penn St hat and a Notre Dame jacket, but that was back in or near HS. Nowadays, I think I only have a Yale fleece, but my stepdadwent there and we go to hockey and football games.

I have 2 Harvard sweatshirts...but my uncle goes there, so that's why I have (and wear) them. Chat Icon But I do wear my Baruch sweatshirt more often, since that's where I went.

Other than that I wouldn't wear something from some random school, but I don't think anything of it if someone else does.

DH wears some college stuff because he is into college sports. He has a Duke hat and T-shirt, but never went there.

Re: OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

I wouldn't wear something from a school I didn't attend. It's weird IMO. And what makes a sweatshirt from Yale more comfortable than one from a junior college??

ETS: If you're a fan of a school team that's a different story. But yes, I do find it strange to wear apparel from institutions from which you have absolutely no affiliation. How does that even happen? Do you walk into random school/university bookstores and pick out a shirt or hat for the hell of it?? Chat Icon

Huh? Chat Icon I don't think anybody said that a sweatshirt from an Ivy league school is more comfortable than any other school.

Generally I'll only wear clothing from schools that I or a family member has attended, but I've made a couple exceptions for colleges that have a team I'm a fan of, etc.

Re: OK to wear clothing to school you didn't attend?

Except for a t shirt that my brother got me from his college, the only clothes I own with college logos are from schools I attended. DH went to Yale, but won't wear any clothes from there.
