OMG... My cousin is the new Tanaiste (VICE-PRESIDENT) OF IRELAND!!!!
OK, so this past year I haven't been keeping up with my cousins across "the pond".
Some were visiting this week and I found out my second cousin, Mary Coughlan, is now Tanaiste or Vice President of Ireland Effective May 8th.
She was the youngest woman ever elected to the Irish parliament at the age of 22 When she gave her first speech, entirely in Irish, more than half the chamber of geriatric old men walked out... she never let them see her sweat!! Go Mary!!
She's well liked by the other members of parliament and is known for bringing dissenting parties together.
OK, well her stance on gay marriage/adoption isn't ok in my book but divorce in Ireland only became legal in the last 15 years so I guess I can only expect so much.
My entire family is so proud

what'a small world it is, DH's cousin is a TD in Ireland for Cavan and was just made Minister for Agriculture in the recent elections. So, I am sure they know of each other!!!!

Co. Donegal. She lives in Frosses, where our grannies, who were sisters, were born and raised. She lives there with her DH who is a Garda (police officer) and her two children.
She was elected to the Irish Parliament at the age of 22. She took over the seat of her late father (he died quickly of cancer, he served for two or three years) Before her father, the seat was held by her uncle who died in an autombile accident while in office (he had only served a couple of years as well).
She's overcome a lot of tragedy in her life.
The death of her father, her DH lost a leg a few years into their marriage and her DS was born deaf.

Theresa, I just read the article. DH's cousin is Brendan Smith (he's in the article too!) and ironically, he's just filled the position your cousin just left to be Tanaiste. How strange is that?!!!?! what a small world!
