When i was a kid..I went to a very good gynmastics school and my teachers were a husband a wife team from the Russian circus. Every single class...while we warmed up, they would have their two daughters (ages 6, 11) in splits and be sitting on top of their backs as they screamed and cried. Everything they did in that gym was through tears. It was sad.
ETA: this video didn't shock me at all, sadly

Don't all olympic athletes train very hard? They may not be so strict at 6 years old, but its very difficult to be that caliber.
I didn't find it disturbing either, does that make me cold-hearted? I think they were being pushed harder than little kids should and its a shame they don't enjoy their sport.

Not like my 15 year old client who was tortured, beaten and starved when he was found with a locket with the Dalai Lama's picture and refused to tell the government officials that his dad gave it to him.

the kids don't want to be there. their parents force them. at least that's what the 1 Dad said.

I totally agree that kids shouldn't be foreced to do something they don't want to do - but I am sure this is not exclusive to China. I am sure there are parents in the US who are forcing their children to practice a sport, or an instrument when they don't want to.
I don't know if I would call it sick. The dad in the video said he forces her to do it because he knows she will have a better life if she is respected as an athlete. I don't see how that is different than any parent wanting what is best for their children, although I do think this is taking it to an extreme. But on the other hand - there are many girls who are abandoned by their families at birth because they are girls.

China has done that to their athletes for years. Not just the Olympics. They have so much pressure to win. It's not just a dream to win like in the US. For them, it's really a do or die. Yes, like the old Russia.
