Phyl - if the fires are so close to you why arent' they evacuating your area?
How on earth can you function let alone get work done right now?
I'm not evacuated because there is not a threat here in my neighborhood. The winds kept the fire moving away from here. Luckily the hills next to my house haven't caught fire

Phyl I am so sorry...I really thought things were looking better
They are looking better in the surrounding LA and above areas.. They had most of the resources. We JUST started getting air drop help for our "Santiago"Fire and it's not really making any progress right now. We still have some winds down in OC and toward our poor local mountains that are burning out of control

All toll roads and freeways are open for this morning's commute. Metrolink is operating from Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo this morning but not to and from Oceanside, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano because of safety concerns. Amtrak trains are running from San Diego to Los Angeles.

Erratic winds, hot weather and dry brush are continuing to fan the flames of the Santiago fire and produce “very active fire behavior,” according to Angela Luedtke, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Fire Authority.
Luedtke said the fire, which scorched 22,000 acres by Wednesday night and continues to rage despite diminishing Santa Ana winds, has entered the Cleveland National Forest. At the same time, the blaze is also threatening Williams Canyon and Hamilton Truck Trail. Fire officials predicted the flames would march into Riverside County within the next 24 hours.
Luedtke said the U.S. Forest Service was now part of the Orange County fire response, along with the Orange County Sheriff’s Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Management.
Containment of the fire shrank from 50 percent Wednesday afternoon to 30 percent Wednesday night.
Weary firefighters are having to cope with a fire now racing in two directions: south to Williams Canyon and Hamilton Truck roads and northeast into the forest.
Fourteen homes have been destroyed by the wind-whipped blaze. Eight other homes were damaged by the fire. Modjeska Canyon was hit the hardest.
More than 43,000 residents have been chased from their homes by the flames.
Luedtke blamed the spreading blaze on “changing wind patterns, critical fire weather, and problematic fuel and topographic conditions,” which she said accounted for the fire's “rapid rate of spread.”
Temperatures remained in the high 80s with single-digit humidity.
OCFA Batt. Chief Kris Concepcion said that even though winds had died down, they tended to be more erratic in canyon areas, spurring the flames forward.
The number of fire personnel on the ground grew dramatically Wednesday, from 600 to 1,060. Firefighters from the OCFA, U.S. Forest Service, California Department of Forestry, and Brea, Orange and Santa Ana Fire Departments banded together to beat back the blaze.
Concepcion said resources were slowly arriving from around the state, “but we could always use more.”
The number of air support craft remained the same: four helicopters and four tankers.
Luedtke said “continued air support will be critical,” in fighting the fire.
While most of the county's residents slept Wednesday night, tired firefighters battled the flames as the blaze raced eastward. Bright orange flames licked at the tops of canyon ridges, gobbling up acre after acre, and taking with it firefighters' hard-fought victories to stop the fire's progress.
The fire’s growth underscored how difficult it has been for firefighters to get a handle on a fire drama that is being played out in some of Orange County’s most difficult terrain. Steep canyons, few roads and limited air support have forced firefighters to tread a cautious perimeter around the flames.
“It’s tough terrain,” said Concepcion. “It’s moving into areas that are more inaccessible.”
With limited air support, firefighters are forced to hike in on foot and be more cautious in plotting an escape route.
He said that the drop in containment, “while a little discouraging,” was not unusual.
“It’s not atypical in wildfires of this magnitude for containment to go up and down,” Concepcion said.
With its entry in the Cleveland National Forest, the fire was now a “campaign fire,” Concepcion said.
“It’s a long-term fire,” he said. “Based on the numbers we’re going to be here the rest of the week.
Even then, “It’s going to take us a while to mop it up and be very sure we got it all.”
A reward is being offered by the Orange County Fire Authority for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the Santiago fire. The OCFA reward was originally set at $70,000, but officials said they are pooling donations from several sources and will likely announce the total reward amount sometime Thursday.

We are doing ok. My step-daughter in Rancho Santa Fe had her baby boy this am. 4 weeks early. she doesn't know if she has a house but we got the best gift of a beautiful healthy boy
