On the topic of VA Tech....
this is such a terrible terrible thing to have happened, but it begs the question
why is it that these mass killings, especially at schools, do not really happen in NYC?
People always say how dangerous the city is, but you don't really ever hear about some kid going ape$hit and taking out 30 of his classmates.
things like Columbine, and that young kid in Texas that took out a bunch of people shooting from the bell tower...
thoughts?

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
I think it is because we don't live in a gun culture in NYC. The NYPD is vigilant about anti-gun campaigns.
I also think our young people have more outlets to gear their anger towards and from an early age taught to reach out for help. As a teacher, I am always on the look out for students who just don't seem right and there is intervention ASAP.
I work in a high school were there was a shooting 7 years ago that was related to gang vilolence.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
Interesting that you post this....we were discussing this exact same thing this morning at breakfast.
I think one of the reasons (IMO anyway) is that we are surrounded by violence in a real way & most of us have seen or been affected by a consequence of real violence at one point or another. I think for someone who just has an arbitrary idea of a weapon without really knowing/understanding the full repercussions of using it maybe contributes to why this does not happen here.
Although I will say I do not think any area is immune to this. Guns are way to easy to come by if you really want one, despite all of the tremendous efforts to regulate them.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
Certain areas have certain subcultures. NYC has hard gun control. Most urban areas aren't hunters and/or supporters of the "lets have guns" organizations that more southern and rural areas uphold.
I am not trying to stereotype but guns may be more accessible in these areas due to hunters, etc.
Guns have been found in NYC schools, but many schools have higher security (9/11)
I went to NYU grad and you couldn't even get in the library without a card.

don't some schools in NYC have metal detectors and people patting down kids before they get in?

I think it begs the question about gun control and laws...this is going to lead into another national debate about gun control.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
NY has very strict gun laws in comparison to other states. And the schools that are considered violent have security precautions.
NYPD has a seperate school enforcement division.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
my high school had metal detectors (the ones you walk under and the hand helds)
but I haven't seen a college that does.
and this person was a student...had access like any other.
but you don't hear about NYC college students shooting each other up.
NYU, Columbia, Fordham, St. John's LI Brooklyn...all have campuses..dorms??
I guess it could go back to gun control...and other outlets, things to do etc.
and of course, I hope and pray it never happens here, or anywhere else again for that matter.

I think it is partially b/c campuses in NYC probably have more security just because they are in NYC.
I also think that the pressure that students at VA tech have on them, especially in engineering came into play. (not that the school's that you listeed aren't good school's).
but, I still think that it could happen here just as easily, but it just hasn't.

there was a show on this the other day...I think on history international. It was about the most notorious mass killings.
at least one, but I think more than that, was at a college, in Texas.

Other than a few guards, Fordham has little security, if any, in their Bronx campus. There are no metal detectors at all. They are also across from Roosevelt HS. When I went to school that was the worst school for violent crimes (rapes, assault, murder) in the US.

yeah, I went to JJC. cops ABOUND in that school (off duty, but still) and I still saw some kid get stabbed in the neck on the stairwell.
I am not saying that violence doesn't happen...but it is usually directed at the "offending" person...not at randoms in tne street.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
I'm really not sure why NYC hasn't had occurrences.
I wonder if it might have to do with the diversity of cultures, values, lifestyles in NYC. Young students may not feel as isolated or discriminated against by their peers or adult models, as they would in a more homogenous community.
Though I think it could happen here...I think because the violent nature of the action probably has to do with a child's upbringing and social development factors, and is not specific to location.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
NY gun laws i think helped save a major disaster at my highschool - because we had a student try to set the library on fire, he had a number of flares in his hands and flres taped to his chest looked like dynamite during the incident
no one was hurt - but if this kid could have gotten a gun he would have he was obessed over them and he cracked when his girlfirend borke up with him thenight before the incident
it can happen anywhere - the worst schools NY tries to protect but that is no guarantee - moving out of ny is a gurantee - I know a family who moved to littlelon prior to columbine because they thought NY was too dangerous for there kids to go to high school there and looked what happened
i think our gun laws help NY but you never know where a parents from and could have lots of guns

I was thinking the same thing, just before I read your response. If something happened on campus, they would tighten security for a short while, and things would go back to the way they were before.
I was talking to DH about this today too and we were talking about security on college campuses. I just don't see how you could keep such a close watch on every building on a campus, with the numbers of people and the number of entrances and exits in each one. It might not be that tough to do metal detectors in a HS, but unless the college is very small, it is tough to do.
ETA: It COULD be done, but I think it would be cost prohibitive.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
I have to say that I don't necessarily think it has to do with the gun control laws, perhaps just luck . . .
When I was in HS, a kid (who was occassionally picked on) decided to bring a gun to school. Fortunately/unfortunately, it accidentally went off when we were in art class - he had been playing with it in his pocket and accitdentally undid the safety. He ended up blowing off his pinky toe. We wer all stunned but someone was able to tackle him and call the police.
Turns out, he stole the gun from his father's locked gun box. His father was a detective with the police dep't.

There was one in Albany, in late 1994 I remember seeing it on the news when I was a freshman. Someone from my HS was there & actually got gun away from the nut that took the class hostage. He was the only one shot. (He lived)
The only random shooting a crowd thing around here that I can remember was the LIRR shooting in the early 90s.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
Actually there was a college shooting in NYC in 1986. I really think it could happen anywhere...pressure and emotions are high in HS and college, and I think that is a dangerous combination.
