I think it is partially b/c campuses in NYC probably have more security just because they are in NYC.
Other than a few guards, Fordham has little security, if any, in their Bronx campus. There are no metal detectors at all. They are also across from Roosevelt HS. When I went to school that was the worst school for violent crimes (rapes, assault, murder) in the US.
I live in the Bronx and am familiar with the Fordham area and there's alot of police presence in that area. That part of the Bronx is not necessarily nice or the nicest, but I believe it's ALOT better and safer to have Fordham Univ. across from Roosevelt rather than across from Evander, Clinton or Kennedy High School. Thos schools are HORRIBLE!!!! Furthermore, I really do believe this can happen anywhere...even NYC. Hopefully it won't.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
I teach in an NYC middle school, and we've caught kids with guns and knives on more than one occasion. Guns are very easy to get on the street. We don't have metal detectors. They aren't foolproof anyway- my old school had them and some of the kids were still able to get past with their weapons.
I don't know if I totally agree with this, but I was talking to a friend about the rash of suburban shootings that happened a few years ago. My friend thinks that suburban kids are better at hiding their dysfunction. I don't know how true that is, but during my experience in an inner city school, I have found that we've usually been able to identify the "time bombs". Of course, that means very little and you really can never know what someone's going to do.

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
I'm an adjunct at NYU and full time professor at Hofstra and NYU has the highest security presence of any school I've taught at (I've taught as an adjunct at 7 other schools). I forgot my faculty id once and they wouldnt let me in the building - I had the syllabus, class list, assignments - plus tons of id's identifying me as haviang the name matching my syllabus - but they still refused until a person from my department came to the classroom (8 blocks away) and vouched for me.
Hofstra does not have the same level of security, but they are introducing more and more 'smart classrooms' which can only be opened with an ID card. The professor is the only one who can open the door 10 minutes before class - and only students registered for that class can unlock the door afterwards. Not all the buildings have this feature - but perhaps given the events at VA Tech, more and more of their buildings will have it.
I think the gun control culture in NYC is largely responsible for the lack of shootings - and the culture of living in a city as well. Not that they dont have problems - NYU in recent years has had a high suicide rate among its students - I think 5 or 6 in the last year. (not sure of exact number).
This kind of tragedy can happen anywhere though. It's so unbelievably sad.

As a past Hofstra student, i never understood what this security feature was for other than making those without ID late for class. Now I realize how great that feature was and how its virtually the only measure that can protect a student other than metal detectors, which will not happen.

yes - I remember not quite appreciating it as a security measure when I first was assigned to one of those classrooms - but now I'd be happy to see more and more of them.

I think one of the reasons (IMO anyway) is that we are surrounded by violence in a real way & most of us have seen or been affected by a consequence of real violence at one point or another. .
That might be part of it. DH & I often wonder why other cities riot after sporting events & that doesn't really happen here.
Our other theory is that NY'ers are too busy to riot!

I used to think this was really annoying about NYU but now that I work at a university with almost non-existent security, I appreciate the NYU guards. I never felt uncomfortable there, no matter how late I was working.

I do feel safe in the city, but in general, open fire can happen easily on trains, subways, etc....I praise God we don't hear about it more......

Re: On the topic of VA Tech....
i agree w/ the perceptions of guns. Where I taught last year, most of my 5th graders had shot a gun, many had their own... i bet you wouldn't get that response out of your avg classroom in NY.
Also, i think in NY people of much more skeptical and cautious of others. In Va, not so much. Didn't need to check in at dorms, every just walked in and out. Different culture.
Also, there are incidents in NY schools... just not of this magnitude. Back in 1997, a student was stabbed in the library in my school.
Let's just hope this doesn't happen anywhere ever again.

its easy to get a gun anywhere if you just know the right people
kids or adults with "issues" are everywhere

but really- this is not a new thing that has just starting happening since colubine- it's been happening for almost 100 years
interesting- very interesting-
I think it could happen anywhere - at any time- guns are not hard to come by if you wanted one- illegal or legal

this is pretty much part of our pop culture now. Going to the top of the bell tower and picking people off is more of a joke than a somber rembrance.

I totally agree - like the 92 LA riots - how much of the world was shocked that the riots never made it to NYC? (although there have been riots,, ie crown heights)
