One Dead Bird, Two on Their Way Out - Getting Nervous Here
I found a bird on my lawn tonight. It was alive but couldn't fly. I thought it may have injured its wing so I put it in a shoe box and its outside on my deck. About an hour ago I walk the dog and see the same type bird dead across the street with no visible injury. My son then tells me there is another one at my neighbor's house alive, but lying on the ground.
I called the Department of Health and waiting for the officer on call to call me back. The rep asked me if they are crows and I am pretty certain they are. I'm nervous now - three birds is not a coincidence. Anyone report dead birds before? Will they come and at least take the bird that's still alive and test it for West Nile? I live on a canal/bird preserve and have never seen this before.

Crows and Blue Jays I believe are the West Niles birds.

I called CDC they gave me the number to the Nassau County Dept. of Health. Still no phone call and the bird on my deck has now died, too .

Re: One Dead Bird, Two on Their Way Out - Getting Nervous Here
So he finally called. He said that finding 3 dead birds or even 10-15 dead birds is nothing to be alarmed about. Something about the laws of nature or along those lines that birds or any kind of wild animals die sometimes without explanation in numbers. I dunno...I have my doubts, but what can ya do?
He said I should continue to report if I see anymore, but to just double bag it and throw it in the trash or bury it in the backyard.
