Re: Opinions...Is it better to buy or lease a car??
IMO, I would rather lease, lower payments, you can get a new car every few years...the only hitch is if you go over your miles....I get 15k a year and it works for me.
I think people that finance their car usually do not keep the car for that much longer than if they were to lease it so they wind up paying more each month and in fact, they could have leased it for less....hope that made sense
Good luck

With leasing...what happens if something goes wrong with it???
depends what that "something" is...you will get a warranty with the lease but for things like breaks, you will need to fix those

Re: Opinions...Is it better to buy or lease a car??
Me and DH always finance. We like that when we are done with payments, we have something to sell and put down on another car. With this extra $ for a downpayment, we are able to get nicer cars each time and still have the same payment. (Or you could get a similar car and have a much lower payment) Plus, we like that we don't have to always worry about how many miles we are driving and normal wear and tear (being hit with a bill at lease end). I know overage miles can usually be rolled into your next lease but then you are forced to buy from the same company. I like having my options and my freedom.
I've heard some good stories about leasing and some not so good stories. I don't want to take the chance.

Buying a car is the worst investment you can make with your money. As soon as you drive it off the lot the value decreases.
This is only true if you buy brand new. If you buy a car that is pre-owned, you have removed that immediate depreciation.
I believe that a lease car is a bad investment. You spend years paying for it and have nothing to show for it in the end.

Re: Opinions...Is it better to buy or lease a car??
Kathleen, I found this article to be really helpful.
http://www.edmunds.com/advice/buying/articles/47079/article.html
Basically it says that buying a used car is the best way to spend your $.
That being said, it is really a personal preference. My boss, who is a finance guru says that a car is the worst "investment" you can ever make and only leases her vehicles.
I drive waaaaaaaaaay too much to lease anything!

Completely disagree with your assessment of people who buy cars and how long they keep them. Most keep them way past the end of their payments. That's how you save money. Buy a reliable car and you will save a ton!

I stated my opinion about buying vs. leasing, that's all....I believe, from what I have seen that my friends who finance cars are selling them after 4-5 years. In that case, it was not worth it to finance a car when they could have leased the same car for 4 years and paid alot less....there is nothing to disagree with, I have seen this happen

Re: Opinions...Is it better to buy or lease a car??
We buy because we don't need or want a new car every three years. I had my previous car for 13 years before I got a new one. I plan to keep my current one for just as long, if it holds out that long. Yes, I did have maintenance bills, but they were never more in any given year than a year's worth of car payments would have been. Insurance costs also decrease as the car ages.
The one time I could consider leasing is when I am a senior citizen and don't want to have to worry about maintaining an older car.

I amstruggling with this decision right now too. I think we are going to lease. Mile wise I am fine, I have a short commute, I am lucky. And I do want a car with lower payments.
Good Luck!

I agree on all counts. For me, leasing does not pay.

I don't know... for me I don't see a car as an investment.
The beauty of leasing is that you don't pay the full price of the car. You pay for the time you have it.
I'm leasing my jeep and the sticker price is around $32k. I put no money down and have up to 12,000 miles a yr. At the end of my lease I will only be paying about $12k to have the car for 3 yrs. If I lease another jeep (which I probably will) then I get a brand new one for another 3 yrs for another $12k. So after 6 yrs i'm on my 3rd new truck and still haven't paid the total cost of the 1st one.
But I can see how some wouldn't want to lease. If you drive far to work everyday and visit fam a lot that is far away it might not be right for you since you would go way over your milage limit.

When you trade in your expired lease for a newer one, do you again have to put down $3,000 (or whatever the down payment is), or does the trade-in count for that? I don't know how it works...

Re: Opinions...Is it better to buy or lease a car??
There is no right or wrong here at all, it's a matter of preference.
A lease may be better for YOU, like me, if you put less than 15k miles per year (I negotiated for 15k).
Also, if you like not having to worry about an expired warranty and costly repairs you may want to lease.
Yes, it is a constant monthly payment, but I put 0 down and would have been making twice the payment to finance.
I got badly burned with a financed car and don't think I will ever finance again, although I would love to keep my current car I love it so much.
P.S. You can always purchase after the lease is up, negotiate the remaining price.

I wouldn't put down a penny on a lease.Yes, your payments are a few dollars higher (that's where good negotiating comes in though), but the extra $$ is in your pocket, not theirs...

Yes it's like starting over again, but I don't put any money down.
Actually when I traded in my last jeep 2 months early I was WAY over miles (10,000 over at least). Jeep worked with me and paid for my last 2 months and didn't charge me a dime for being over my miles! I put no money down.
