Organic products (from yesterday's news)

Did anyone happen to catch the part in the news (maybe Channel 4, NBC??) yesterday where they discussed the benefits of Organic vs. non-organic products? My sister mentioned it to me and said that the FDA does not regulate the Organic stuff Chat Icon.
My whole family thinks I am nuts for insisting on Organic dairy products (when I can) and she was using the news as an argument. i want to see it for myself...

Re: Organic products (from yesterday's news)

How is the FDA not regulating? They HAVE to regulate if it's food.

Maybe what they may not regulate is how organic it is really.

I will tell you that I found that a lot of companies use the word organic but it may not be 100% organic. Only 1 or 2 ingredient might be.

There is a "seal" on products for truly "regulated" organic product. But from what I understand nobody (consumers) really knows about the seal and things are claimed organic when it's a bit misleading.

ETA: there is also a difference on what product we are talking about. Food vs other products. Creams, supplements, etc.. are not regulated!

!

This is exactly what they don't regulate. People can say their products are organic, but they may not be so much. Supposedly if they are certified USDA Organic and have the seal, they really are organic.

Re: Organic products (from yesterday's news)

I quoted this from Newsday I think it was last week.
Organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food, according to a major study published Wednesday.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.

A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.

"A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance," said Alan Dangour, one of the report's authors.

"Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority."

The results of research, which was commissioned by the British government's Food Standards Agency, were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Sales of organic food have fallen in some markets, including Britain, as recession has led consumers to cut back on purchases.

The Soil Association said in April that growth in sales of organic products in Britain slowed to just 1.7 percent in 2008, well below the average annual growth rate of 26 percent over the last decade, following a plunge in demand at the end of the year.

I prefer organic not for the nutritional value like more vitamin C for example but for the lack of pesticides, hormones, etc....
maybe I'm wrong

Yup, that's the important stuff for me too. It's not necessarily that non-organic food are more or less nutritious, it's that I don't want to feed my DD stuff that's been treated with pesticides, hormones and fertilizers. Also, it's really important to me to try to make enviornmentally friendly choices. Things like organically/free-range meats have a much smaller impact on the enviornment than conventional meat farming.

The cover article from last week's Time Magazine addressed these issues--worth a read.

It took a long time but there is a USDA certified organic seal. However, a lot of comapnies throw the world 'organic' or 'all natural' on a label--those are the ones where you have to read the labels carefully.

Re: Organic products (from yesterday's news)

Unfortunately, what is deemed "organic" isn't always how we, the public see it.

If anyone read Skinny B!tch, which basically promotes a vegan organic lifestyle, there is a lot of info in there, and studies are cited, etc. Like most other industries out there-- everyone is in bed with each other-- the Dairy and Meat Associations, the FDA, etc. They all sit on each others boards, hire each other's law firms, etc. The book also lists "safe brands". The FDA is made up of people from all the food and agriculture organizations, AND CEOs in the food industry-- they want to make money, period.

What pisses me off the most-- is that they don't let the public decide for themselves what they want to eat.

So, for example-- if your milk is "organic", they MAY feed the cows organic feed-- but they are still using all the other shite, and keeping them cooped up on top of each other which breeds illnesses, and in turn causes them to use medicines on them to keep them "healthy" and keep making milk. Milk is money-- and they protect their commodity any way possible-- and the more of the commodity they have, the more money they make.

It's quite scary what's in food-- and what the FDA says is safe. After reading this book, I was AFRAID to eat anything! And I am already a vegetarian who eats a lot of organic foods.

Exactly! I think they are misunderstanding why people want organic otherwise.

Sure, non organic is safe. The amount of persticides are within "safe" amounts. NOT amount free though.

Re: Organic products (from yesterday's news)

Does anyone have a list of good organic brands? Or a picture of what the seal looks like? That would be great if you could pass along that info.

This is exactly why I buy organic (especially milk). The study seems to have overlooked why most people buy organic. Chat Icon
