Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
DH and I were out today and went downstairs in Fortunoff to the Christmas store. I must say that it has an incredible display of items for Christmas.
In my search for the quintessential ornament as a gift for a family member, I noticed that my taste brought me to the very expensive ornaments. I thought to myself that if I had a tree, I'd be in the poor house and again wished some wealthy family would hire me to decorate their house for Christmas on their dime(s).
My question to you is, how do you not lose yourself in the beauty of the holiday by not buying everything in sight? I do realize that with many holidays, everything has become commercialized, but I did not feel that there - it was just a place full of people who wanted to make their homes beautiful for the upcoming season. I think if I celebrated Christmas, there would be no end.

Four words...DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS SALES....We never ever buy anything full price. My mom has been collecting Hallmark Ornaments for 30 plus years and passed all of the ornaments that are mine onto me.

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
Good plan! I saw a few Chanukah ornaments that were in the 50-60 dollar range and they were beautiful. Chanukah is not really a holiday where we decorate, but I like the idea of a trinket here and there. Then again I do have the ornaments chaped like wedges of cheese hanging in my kitchen from where I am supposed to hang pots.

Like the PP said: DAY AFTER Christmas.
Or even a few days after. I got all of my Hallmark ornaments for up to 60-75% off because I waited. I will do this every year and eventually pass them on to my children.

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
I always go the day after xmas for decorations, wrapping paper, gift tags, cards, and stocking stuffers/grab bags. You get awesome deals. Then I pack it away with the xmas stuff and a year goes by and you forget what you got and when u open all the xmas stuff to decorate VOILA new stuff and it is like a surprise I am such a dork but it is true!
It is so funny every year the day after xmas i spend a good amount of money on wrapping stuff and every yr DH complains about it and how I am nuts.....but every year when xmas hits he goes to the wrapping paper tub and has everything he needs and he says woo this is so great.....you would think he would be nicer to me the day after xmas when I shop but he isnt. I guess since we just xmas shopped and spent so much money I do it again and shop more!

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
this may sound cheap to some people
but what i do is buy the expensive ornaments that come 4 or 6 in a package and then i keep one and individually wrap the rest for my brother, sister, parents, aunts, uncles or cousins - depending on who I need to buy for.
I don't hide the fact that it is part of a set - I love that we each have one piece of the set and it connects us each year when we put up our trees. . . I just do this with close family, don't want to be labeled as a cheapo LOL

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
Like the others, I do a lot of after Christmas shopping...But I also buy at craft fairs, etc., and buy ones that mean something to us. I love the homemade ones! I hate the generic glass ball trees...I love seeing our history reflected in our ornaments. We don't have any super expensive ones though.

I dont think that sounds cheap at all. I would be inclined to do something meaningful like that too.

I think id have a different tree in every room.
I'd love that, but I'd need more than 1 room big enough to hold a Christmas tree, and more than just DH to help me decorate! Oh, and a place to keep all that, besides just the funds to afford the decorations.
My MIL has a few wire trees throughout the house with smaller ornaments.
Ornaments really do run the gamut--they arent'all priced liek the fancy Fortunoff ones.
When I was 23 & had my first Christmas tree, I went to dollar stores & no name discount places in Queens & bught lots of boxed ornamets, as a base. I sitll have some of them.
Now I've inherited a bunch of Dh's from childhood (he collets a Hallmark series) interspersed with one I've poicked up at after Christams slaes at Bomaby & Crate & Barell.
They also make good gifts. My boss usually gets me a nice ornament form Pier 1, and we've gotten my mom fancy Lenox ones, so you tree really does get filled up easier than you'd think.

OMG every single thing you said is me exactly!
For us its simple. Besides day after sales we really dont have much more room for more decorative stuff as pretty as it is!

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
I do the after Christmas sales also...we do have a decent tree at this point, though. Between gifts and ornaments bought over the years our tree is pretty full. We both love ornaments though, so we always end up buying each other a special ornament each year.

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
I LOVE Christmas and the decorations!!!! I start searching in October for ornaments. I haven't dared to walk into Fortunoff yet.
We do 2 trees and wish we had room for more. (In due time. )
I've been hording ornaments from Home Goods and Tuesday Morning since last month. I was going to hit up Harrows yesterday, but decided to wait until during the week.
I don't spend an exorbitant amount of money, but I do spend quite a bit. (And I've got the crawl space to prove it. )

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
I love Swarovski and Lenox ornaments. I usually get them as gifts but sometimes I get them after Christmas when they are 1/2 off. That's also when I get most of my wrapping paper and cards.

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
We buy one set of new ornaments a year, it keeps things in perspective. You only have enough room for so many ornaments a year on a tree.

Re: Ornament question for those of you who celebrate Christmas
I have to be honest here....I LOVE Christmas and find it hard not to buy buy buy, but I tell myself no shopping until we decorate the tree/house. This helps because I often forget that we already have some of the stuff or we have even nicer things. The only things I do buy as soon as they come out are new lights if we need them and some yard candy canes. We also buy 1 new ornament a year and treat ourselves to a day at Bronners and then dinner. It is hard not to have a different tree in every room and when you see them on display they look perfect, but in reality I could not afford to do that and I wouldn't want to. I love that my tree is just that my tree. I have an ornament of a frog prince, a HUGE diamond engagment ring, my dog's first Christmas ornament, Joe's family ornaments and I could go on and on. It's nice to see all of the memories from years past and to see how things have changed.

I have ridiculous taste.... I have an attraction to sterling silver (not even plated!) snowflake ornaments.
It has become a tradition over the last 15 years or so to put one ornament in my stocking every year. Not quite as painful as buying a dozen at once at about $65 each

I completely agree with the after Christmas sales. I usually go to Hallmark and Macys the day after Christmas and stock up.
