Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)

Watching DC in the home is MUCH different than driving on the road. exactly. Here is a very recent example: there is one kid in DD's class (they are 3-4 YO), her grandma picks her up sometimes and we have noticed that she'll put the kid in her car seat , but never strap her in and will drive off just like that. This grandma watches the little girl 3 days a week for few hours while the mom works. ...Long story short just today one of the parents told me that someone told the little girl's mom about grandma not strapping the child into a car seat , the mom got very upset, crying , she couldn't believe that her mom would be "so irresponsible and stupid" ...
I don't feel comfortable anyone else but me or DH driving DD anywhere.
omg- that poor mother. see, though, that doesn't really have to do with driving, per se. That's more of following instructions. I wouldn't allow someone who doesn't follow my safety instructions to watch my kids at all. For example, they might also give apples when I say no apples. or 100 other things. if it doesn't have to do with safety, i dont care so much. grandparents can spoil my kids (give them cookies when i wouldn't, etc), but they have to follow my safety instructions if they want to be alone with my kids. driving or not. my dad actually said he is scared of me on this (and he and i have a super relationship) he found a pill on the floor in their house (when i wasnt there, neither were my kids) and he told my mom, omg, dont ever let kris see something like that, she won't let the kids be here. then one time he suggested that if he had to pick up my DD from daycare and didnt have a car seat, he could drive really slowly and my mom could hold DD. i said ***???? you are kidding, right? he said ok ok---i will never i promise. im scared of you and will never do anything with your kids that i have any doubt about without your clear permission. he even ratted my mom out once when she gave a teething biscuit before i had ok'd them.

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
I let anyone who is watching DS drive him around, that has been his aunts, his uncles, his grandparents, my aunts. My MILs can be a little flighty sometimes, so it makes me nervous, Im not going to lie, but shes never hurt anyone, nor has she ever been in a major accident.
Hell, I have probably been in more accidents, than the total of those people combined.....so if I can drive him around, they certainly should be able too!

I wouldn't trust my ILs to watch DD so I definitely wouldn't trust them to drive with DD.
I would trust my parents or my sisters to drive with DD because I trust them.

I think for me it's more of a control issue than a trust issue I get nervous even when DH goes out driving with DD. Yup, I'm crazy like that

I would let my sister, Mom, MIL or SIL drive them. Plus my best friend. I feel that they are all safe drivers. My FIL is an aggressive driver so I would hav eto think about letting them go with him. It has never come up though...actually DH or I are the only ones who have ever driven them anywhere.

At this point, I wouldn't trust anyone, especially his grandparents. Watching or driving, they are not as careful as my DH and I nor are they baby prepared.

Since I travel a lot for work I have not choice but to trust people driving DD around. My mother drives her around the most and I completely trust her but my fil and mil do as well when they watch her

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
I just my aunt just fine and I love my father to pieces.
Its not them I don't trust its the other people on the road.
Its the second guess thinking of "what if" and how would I hate myself if AJ or my Aunt were hurt?
Its an all for one and one for all type thinking. If we're going down, we're going down as a family.
Plus my aunt and my father are sucker$ for my kid. I can drive and deal with the crying and such in the back seat. I think its too much for them. They aren't 30 anymore and my Aunt never had kids to start with.

If I am trusting someone enough to watch my child, I trust them enough to drive them around. If I didn't have that trust, they wouldn't be watching my kids...end of story.

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
I have major issues with anyone driving DS around. The only person who really watches DS is my aunt and she is the only one who I allow to drive DS around. She has had a car seat in her car since he was born. As for anyone else.... I don't think I would be comfortable with it.
ETA: If my Mom was still alive I would have no issue at all with them in the car with her at all.

I let whoever is watching my kids drive them anywhere and everywhere. I know when I am home I get sooo antsy sitting in the house all day that I would never restrict someone who is watching my kids to do the same.
But I'm a very laid back mom normally.
My thoughts exactly.

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
My mom watches DS 5 days a week.
He is 7 months old and since the winter was brutal, she hasn't needed to go anywhere with him.
She has said that she does not feel comfortable driving him anywhere, that she would rather walk him in the stroller. She also doesn't drive highways - just local streets and not too far at that.
That being said, I don't know how comfortable I am with someone other than DH & myself driving DS. Heck I sometimes am on edge when DH has him - he's very much a city driver, which makes me nervous.
Like a pp said it's more about the crazies on the road than my mother actually driving him.
I guess when the time comes that my mom needs to take him somewhere that she can't walk, I'll know how I truly feel about it.

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
Here are my honest feeling and this is just me I am not judging anyone else.
I just can't help but to be nervous about my child driving with anyone else. I even get nervous when I am driving him around. I have anxiety about driving and it has nothing to do with not trusting my family members. I actually just worry about the other people on the road and the "God forbids".
My son has driven with my parents once and it was a short drive to pick me up from the doctor. It was fine and I was fine but I would never feel comfortable letting my baby drive around all day with someone else. I would worry (probably unnessessarily) but I can't help it. I even try to limit my driving with my baby on a daily basis.

I am very overprotected... but I let my mommy drive with Carlie, but I am usually in the car with her if that is the case.
Then again, she is the only person who has ever watched Carlie if it isn't me or my DH... I haven't left her with anyone else but her, nor do I plan too lol

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
My inlaws have taken or picked DS up from school on many occasions.
My sister has drove with DS.
I trust my brother too, but, he hasn't drove yet with DS (or DD).
These are the people I trust.
Do I prefer it's me driving? Of course, but, I trust them with all of my heart. They are helping me out, so, I can't complain.
(if my dad needed to ever help out, I'd trust him as well).

this is me too...I've never thought twice about the sitter or my family driving DS around. He could just as easily get injured in a house as in a car (probably safer in the car since he's in a seat).

Same here...I use to take the kids I watched to the park, library, mommy and me, the mall.. You can't be stuck in a house ALL day (9 hours) and not go stir crazy...My brother has a car seat in his car for DS and I always have an extra seat available for whoever watches DS so they can take them out...

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
My IL's watch DC 3 days a week & drive DD to school & pick her up & they've taken her shopping, to the zoo, etc. They are EXTREMELY careful w/ her & I trust them fully.
Just last week they were rear-ended by a 17 year old driver that just got her license that week. They were turning into DD's school block & 17 yr. old wasn't paying attention & bumped them. Well 2 minutes later another driver pulls up & says those 3 girls just cut us off & they were driving recklessly. ALL were okay & the car was basically tapped; my IL's were so apologetic & it scared them. Sure things happen, but I'd rather my children be out & going to school & doing things w/ their grandparents than sitting home all day. I trust them & know they are very cautious.
My parents drive them the days they watch them as well.
If it ever got to a point where I didn't feel safe having them drive; I'd say something (all parents are getting older & if they had some condition, etc.)

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
i dont get why some find it hard to understand u can trust someone to watch ur kid but u dont trust them to drive.. some people have horrendous driving habits.
i trust my mother and sister 100% to drive ds around. would i ever trust my fil? heck i wouldnt be sitting in the car if hes driving let alone my kid...
2 completly different things.. watching ur kid is one thing.. driving them around is another.

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
SIL told me she was going to come pick up DS when he was 3 weeks old. No askiing....so that was the only time I wasn't happy with it.... since she didn't ask if it was OK by me first. But other then that, I never really minded ... as long as it wasn't someone I bearly met HA.

Re: Other people driving with your DC in the car(specifically family)
my dh is the worst driver i know...and i really can't stop him from driving kids around, so i guess anyone else driving them is a break on my nerves.
my sister is a person who talks on cellphone and texts while she drives. There is strict instruction that josh will tell on her...so in order for him to drive with her, he holds her phone. She takes him to tons of fun places, movies, out to eat, go out for ice creams...so this seemed like a good compromise.
when my parents are down, they drive them around.
