Pacifiers

I found out my hospital LIJ NHP does not give out pacifiers anymore. I wanted the exact pacifier they give in the hospitals, so I found them on Ebay and ordered a bunch.

They just came today, and are individually wrapped and are the same exact ones used in hospitals.

So, if you are interested in them, you can find them on Ebay :)

Yes, but the ones they sell in stores are completely round, these are the ones with the dip for the nose

Re: Pacifiers

NS manhasset still gives them, with your permission, but they are now just like the soothies that is sold under Avent. No longer the notched ones like they had for dd1 three years ago.

Re: Pacifiers

These are similar to Gumdrop Pacifiers, and you can find those in the stores. Those are what DD uses.

ETA: The Gumdrop ones are cheaper than the ones you're looking at on Ebay.

Pacifiers

yeah LIJ is very pro breastfeeding... I asked for formula and they never gave it to me. It was very different than when i delivered with Hailey. They didnt give about Pacifiers then either so i brought my own. But i had a much more pleasant experience with Hailey than i did this time.

So if they didn't give you formula, what did you do? Did you have to have someone bring it in to you?
That is nuts!!

Re: Pacifiers

Everything, and not once did I feel any pressure or guilt regarding my choice to solely formula feed from anyone there. Nor did they make me feel guilty sending dd to nursery every night.

- similac advance nursettes
-nipples for nursettes
-pacifiers
-wipes
-dry disposable cloths
-pampers
-chucks pads, pads
-nurse asked me if I wanted a belly binder, and gave one to me

Eta: regarding pp about ns manhasset

I delivered at LIJ in May and had no problem with getting formula. I was BFing and supplementing and they gave me a ton of extra to take home.

I delivered at LIJ 5 weeks ago and had no pressure to breastfeed at all. I was actually surprised!

It's so ridiculous how hospitals have become with this breastfeeding thing. I don't understand why they have to try and pressure people Into doing it. I am a ftm and tried to EBF but ended up combined feeding for 2.5 weeks and then ultimately switched to exclusively FF. During the hospital my DS was screaming his head off all night for both nights and i thought he had colic and the nurses told me he was "cluster feeding" and that it was perfectly normal (he didn't sleep all night). It turns out that he was undernourished as I was not producing and he had lost a ton of weight as a result. In hindsight I am very upset with the hospital for not helping me realize that he was hungry and needed more nourishment. They didn't offer formula or pacifiers and I they knew that I didn't know what I was doing. At a certain point it needs to be the parents decision about how to raise the child and not the hospital, and sometimes we need guidance. Rant over

It's so ridiculous that they don't give pacifiers anymore. My DD was admitted to Cohens childrens hospital at 11 days old for RSV and every doctor and nurse asked if she had a pacifier!! They gave me the hospital ones even though I had my own and even gave me sweet water to dip it in to soothe her even more. Even they think it's crazy that they don't offer them in the nursery anymore! It helps to soothe the baby. And obviously it works when they use them in the NICU, PICU, etc!

This is so strange to me. DS was born almost 4 years ago, he was EBF and the hospital was very pro-BF. But he would scream his guts out during the pediatrician visits so once morning he just came back with a pacifier in his mouth because they couldn't take it anymore lol. They didn't even ask me if it was ok but I honestly didn't care at that point. It's so strange to me they wouldn't have any.

They can say what they want about being "breastfeeding friendly" by not giving pacifiers and formula, but I don't buy it for a SECOND.
It's them cutting costs and being cheap. Same with doing away with nurseries and having the baby room in all night and day.
Just like everything else. It's all about the money. These big hospitals are owned by huge corporations. They don't give a rat's azz about you or your baby....they only care about their bottom lines.

I completely agree. It's a $$ thing. But I also think it is good for them to encourage moms to BF but not pressure people into doing so. NSUH was great in that respect. They provided formula for my DS at night when I choose to send him to nursery. No pressure to room in either. They just asked my wishes and did not comment one way or another. Also if they are going to divest in formula they should invest in more lactation consultants. I was pissed that I was not able to see one at NSUH because she was too busy and I had to be waitlisted.

I also think it depends on the nurse and nurse manager on staff! That's why so many of us have different experiences at the same hospitals.
