Pap while pregnant?

I am 14w pregnant and due for my annual gynecological visit. At my last obstetrical appointment, they told me they would do a pap smear at my next visit. I questioned the nurse, stating that if they find anything, I won’t let them treat me until November anyway. She told me it was standard practice and what if I have HPV that could lead to cervical cancer, blah, blah, blah…

Okay, there is virtually no way I have HPV, as they would have caught it somewhere in one of the last 7 paps I have had since I met my husband. Also, after the year of fertility treatments it took to get me pregnant, there isn’t a freckle on my body someone doesn’t know about.

Is it common to have a pap while pregnant? None of the friends I asked have had to have one.

Re: Pap while pregnant?

yes it is common, I had one with both pregnancies

i think you should have one in case there is any bacterial infection or anything that would need to be treated

Re: Pap while pregnant?

You can have HPV for literally decades and never have an abnormal pap, and then all the sudden you do.

Even if you get a pap, and you have dysplasia, it would almost definitely be stage one (I am saying this since it seems as though you get regular check ups) and if it is stage one, there would be no reason for them to do any type of procedure. You would just have to come back ever 3 to 6 months and be checked.

Also, do not let them pressure you into getting a Leep if by any chance you do have dysplasia. There are so many other options besides a Leep. If you have any questions, feel free to FM me.

Re: Pap while pregnant?

I had a pap test done at my last appt. at 22 weeks. I switched doctors during my pregnancy, and they wanted to have the results for their records.

They gave me advance notice at my previous appt, which I appreciated, but I wasn't concerned about it at all.

Re: Pap while pregnant?

I had a Pap while pregnant, and katiebug is right about HPV lying dormant for years. You could have it and not know. I would let them do the pap - there is no harm whatsoever.

i had my pap done when i found out i was pregnant.

As far as the HPV, it is very very common. It may not show up in a pap for many years and then one day it may show up.

i wouldnt worry about having a pap done.

My friend found out that she has HPV during her routine pg pap last year. She had been with her dh for over 6 years and had had LOTS of normal paps before then, so it definitely can happen. It's such a simple thing that I would recommend getting it done just for your peace of mind. Chat Icon

ETA that I had a pap done when I was about 12w or 13w.

I had a PAP at my first appt. My annual appt. was just around the corner so it made sense to do it then while I was there.

Re: Pap while pregnant?

I had one done at 36 or 37 weeks pregnant when I had my first internal. I was due a for it a few weeks earlier but my midwife wanted to do it together with the internal to kill 2 birds with one stone.

Re: Pap while pregnant?

It is common practice to do a pap smear at the beginning of your pregnancy. They are supposed to do it at your first visit if you haven't had an annual visit recently. I didn't have one last time or this time only b.c I had my annual exam 1-3 months before I got pregnant.
