Hope he's pooping better by now.
And yes, it only gets worse the older they get - DS now just plays with his the second I open up the diaper. Apparently they really are born little horn-balls!

Congrats and welcome!! 
We didn't have this exact issue but water has always helped Jake. Our Ped also recommended 1 tbsp of pear juice (instead of prune or anything else) at one point - but he was a few months old at that point - I would check with your ped before giving him anything other than water. I hope Max can poop normally soon and doesn't have to see the ped!
Oh and yes - it's normal but as someone else said - watch out for the pee.

Welcome! 
Elizabeth had major pooping issues when we switched to soy. She would cry and scream every time she pooped and it hurt me. Turns out she's allergic to soy. And milk. And rice. So we switched her to alimentum and she poops without problems now.
