Parents of clingy babies/toddlers
How do you get them to be more self sufficient with play time? My DS used to play beautifully by himself. In the last month and a half all he wants is me. He crawls up to me and tugs on my pants and asks to be picked up. He complains until I do. I love to play with him, but I can't do it all day long.
Any suggestions?

Re: Parents of clingy babies/toddlers
Katie, I'm a RIE mommy now, and its changed our lives!
There is not such thing as "its just a phase" I don't believe it anymore. We made easy simple changes, changed our philosophy, "threw away" busy noisy toys and we are doing amazingly well. The bath is filling up, DS in his room playing by himself cheerfully, and I'm here checking e-mail from DH real quick.
See my recent post on this

eta: I kind of lied ... I didn't really throw them away, I stashed them at my mom's

Re: Parents of clingy babies/toddlers
I just ordered it too. My DS is so clingy & can't play by himself for more than 10 minutes. I hope it's not too late to start this- he's almost 12 months.
You said you threw away all of your loud toys? That is most of what we have here & what others give to us as gifts

Re: Parents of clingy babies/toddlers
I do believe it is just a phase. R has gone thru phases like this many times over the 4 years of his life, but with help from mom and dad he has always gone back to playing beautifully by himself. I can't comment and don't negate the method Shana linked because I haven't looked at it, but I will say children go thru lots of phases through out there lives and this is a classic one (IMO) and the timing is just right for E since he is becoming more mobile and more independent it is normal for him to be more clingy.

Just wanted to add, if your interested there is a great blog I follow, written by a RIE expert.
Lots of tips and advice on the blog, all aligned with the book and the RIE method:

Re: Parents of clingy babies/toddlers
Here is a post she did about toys in her class:

I do keep some of DS's busy electronic toys at my moms. She watches him one day a week so he gets some entertainment there. But for the most part his time is spent "at work" with these toys and he loves it, and I honestly had no idea it could be so simple.
