Parents of school aged kids, some kindergarten questions

Earlier this week we had our first meeting with the kindy teacher and she said that since we are a half day program there is no snack and no field trips. Just wondering what was the norm at other schools. The field trip thing really surprises/annoys me, yet one more thing our kids will be behind on versus other districts.

Is your school full day, extended day (which as I understand it is between full and half day) or half day kindergarten?

Do the kids get a snack if they aren't having lunch there?

Do the kids in kindergarten go on field trips? Can you give examples of where?

TIA!

My kids are not elementary aged yet, but I know from other parents in the neighborhood that K is half day, with 3 field trips a year. Pumpkin Picking in October, singing for the elderly at a nursing home in December, and the zoo in May. At least, that's this year.

We had full day kindegarten with field trips.... quite a dew, actually. We are in Lindenhurst.

My nephew is in Pat-Med, and they had full day kindegarten but no field trips or specials during the week (i.e. no gym, art, library, etc.)

Kindegarten is VERY different from district to district. Districts actually have the option of not doing kindegarten at all. It really varies based on the district.

I teach Kindergarten (full day) and we only do one trip a year. There are two reasons why-they are really hard to schedule (mainly busing and timing issues) and they are typically fairly costly and a hardship on many families. When our district was 1/2 day, I still did snack each day.

Sayville - Full Day and Field Trips when both boys were in. The kids bring in their own snacks and either buy or bring lunch. Noah was K last year.. I remember they did a farm, Connetquot Park and Sunken Forest on Fire Island.. there may have been more but I don't remember.

They get full specials also (art, music, gym, library and computer lab)

Field trips have been cut out in lots of districts due to the budgets....we lost ours this year and 2 years ago....I'm sure we won't have them next year either

They haven't had any field trips but there are a ton of weekend and evening events.

Kindergarten is full day for us and they get snack time. There has only been one field trip so far and that was to the pumpkin patch. I'm not sure if there will be another trip in the spring. My DS does have a lot of special classes during the week. It seems like they have at least 2 a day (foreign language, art, music, gym, etc.).

Re: Parents of school aged kids, some kindergarten questions

Sorry to hijack, but I teach K in Queens and we are going on 2 trips this year, paid for by the parents (last year we did more because Queens College offered us free shows and it didn't cost anything to the families). We are full day, have snack, specials, rest time (short) and center time. Kindergartens vary all over the state...but is not mandated, though I feel it should be based on curriculum/expectations

Our district is full day. My kids go to the catholic school though. That is also full day K. The Pre-K is extended day. Back to K: they have snack every day at 10:30, which the teacher supplies. They can buy lunch (hot or cold), but my DS usually brings his own. They've been on two field trips so far, one to White Post Farms around Halloween and one around Christmas to sing Carols at the nursing home. They have 1 or 2 more this spring.

Wantagh 1/2 Day K- DS had snack and 1 field trip. We paid for the field trip but it wasnt very expensive. I understand they are talking about adding a K enrichment program which would make it an optional full day at the parents cost next year.

We're the same district but it must be a different elem b/c the teacher said that in her class this year she doesn't have snack and there were no field trips.

The last I heard they still hadn't signed contracts for that enrichment program, even though the article in the Citizen made it sound like it was definite. If they have we still haven't gotten any solid information on what it is going to be, where it's going to be. By the time they sign the contracts people will have signed up at other programs anyway.

We are in Wantagh El - Im sure snacks and trips are determined by the school and teacher. We still have snack in the 1st grade.

There is a BOE meeting tonight at 8:00 and I understand the enrichment program is on the agenda. Last I heard it would be at Wantagh El and be run by Scope.

I know, I really wanted to go but DH isn't going to be home in time. Oh well.

The Citizen said it would be at all 3 schools, at our tour of Mandalay last month the principal said she thought it would be there, lol.

Re: Parents of school aged kids, some kindergarten questions

many field trip programs tell the schools what time they must schedule the trip at. for a half day program, they may literally not be able to do many of them because they will get back after dismissal time.

by the time the kids get in, get them unpacked, do attendance, get on the bus, travel to the place, do the program, bathroom breaks and driving back, you may literally miss dismissal.

i don't know anything about your district, but this is a problem that could be preventing trips
