Parents of middle school kids....

Do you ever look at your child's texts? Yes, I'm talking snooping....

Not there yet but I do plan to. When I hand them their first cell phone, I'm going to tell them that it's my property & I have the right to check up on them.

She knows we checkher texts regularly, and can spot check whenever we want. She also thinks we can check to see if texts have been deleted ;)

My middle school child doesn't have a cell phone, and I don't intend to buy one. But, yes, I would be reading my child's texts. In fact, I would be inclined to disable them, since the only reason my child would have a cell phone, would be to call me when not at home. I realize I'm old school about this issue though Chat Icon

Re: Parents of middle school kids....

My dd does not text on her phone but she posts on facebook and I do monitor it and have gone in it and deleted things (I did tell her though).

How are you able to accomplish that??-lol. I actually like my dd having some type of phone/ipod/laptop to get in touch with me when she is out.

Re: Parents of middle school kids....

DS doesn't have a phone, but I do "toss" his room on a regular basis (probably like once a week). There is no such thing as snooping at this age, IMO, be it on a phone, online, in his room etc. He's a child, and has no right to privacy.

If he had a phone, I would be checking it on a daily basis.

He's in 6th grade.

I guess the difference is my child doesn't go out. He is either home or at school, or out with family. I don't send him out with friends alone. So there is just absolutely no need for the expense of a cell phone for our family. If he is at school and needs to call me, they have phones in the office. Maybe in high school Chat Icon

Oh ok. My dd walks to school and sometimes meets her friends before school. She always rides her bike with friends, goes over their houses. I like that I can get in touch with her if a practice at school ends early and she needs to be picked up, etc.
I always said she would not get one until high school (as well as a laptop-lol!!) but I love it and I am sure the office was getting tired of her being in there calling me every day-lol.

I swore I would not and that she did not need it but I hate sometimes that I can't get in touch with her-lol.

Re: Parents of middle school kids....

I read my 14 year old's texts all the time. She understands that her iphone belongs to me, as I pay for it. I also monitor her FB as well as the history on her computer.

I explained to my daughter that her constitutional rights end at our front door.
