Re: Passed a house last nite with Christmas lights all lit up

We put ours up this past weekend and they've been lit. Chat Icon The weather was perfect and we have a rather busy schedule in December, so we seized the opportunity.

I also put a lot of effort into my holiday decorating and it kills me to only have it up for 2 weeks or so. I want to enjoy it for a bit. My fall decorations have been up since September, so I get 2+ months out of those as opposed to the less than 4 weeks for Christmas.

I also love Thanksgiving, but love a lot of the Christmas spirit. Thanksgiving gives me the opportunity to enjoy that time of year with family & friends without some of the pressures associated with Christmas.

I feel like Thanksgiving doesn't count anymore. Because retailers can't prfoit off Thanksgiving as much. And that's a shame because Thanksgiving to me is nicer- more about family, giving thanks-not about greed and what you can get and how much you can buy.

i agree with this i feel like alot of people just skip right over thanksgiving,
i just got a christmas card today tooooo soon!

I don't think it's a big deal. if someone wants Xmas lights up early so be it, it's not like they are hurting someone, maybe there are little kids in the family and they couldn't wait, or maybe it's some old person who was looking forward to it all year long , or maybe they just wanted to and they don't really care what everyone else thinks.... who knows...
I have a Xmas tree up already , and I don't care if it's little too early or if someone thinks I'm crazy , my 2yro DD LOVES it and that's all that matters to meChat Icon

I just saw some houses today all done up and it made me so excited Chat Icon

We have a co-op so we do not do outdoor lights yet.

But I don't see anything wrong with having them up early, we could all use the extra holiday cheer Chat Icon

I believe that you should wait until after Thanksgiving... get through one holiday before we start getting ready/celebrating another. If you want to put them out, at least wait to turn them on.

Yes! I understand that you want to hang them when it's still warmer out. I know how horrible it is to hang lights when it's freezing and windy.
If there is a nice day and you have time-that's great.
But we always hold off on lighting them.

I feel like Thanksgiving doesn't count anymore. Because retailers can't prfoit off Thanksgiving as much. And that's a shame because Thanksgiving to me is nicer- more about family, giving thanks-not about greed and what you can get and how much you can buy.

I agree. Thanksgiving is my favorite and so overlooked.

I have idiots in my neighborhood who have had it lit for weeks now.

I hate it

If you saw any in October into November they could have been lights for the Hindu holiday Diwali (festival of lights).

That is a little harsh....idiots? Come on, there are enough things to gripe and worry about, IMO this isn't one of them.

A house in my neighborhood has lights/decorations on too already. And then RIGHT next door..Thanksgiving decorations! LOL. THats what makes it so funny.

I hate to rush Christmas bc the time goes so fast b/w thanksgiving and Christmas.

I also feel like its not even cold out yet! We actually saw the Christmas Carol last night to try to get ourselves in the holiday mood-this weather has been too darn warm!!!

How come nobody wanted to "celebrate early" like 20 years ago?

Actually, I have gone to CT almost every Thanksgiving of my life and I always remember seeing lights being on some houses on the ride home. Also, it became a tradition that "Feliz Navidad" would play on the radio on the ride up. And we are talking about back in the 70's - 30 years.

And how sad for you to care.
It's a message board... people's opinions will differ from yours.
A normal person wouldn't mind that.

Our neighbor put up their christmas decorations last weekend I was surprised it was so early. Last night driving home I saw several houses lit already.

We just put our Christmas lights up today, and they're lit! I love Christmas and I love my Christmas lights and decorations!! Chat Icon

I wouldn't put them up or light them before Thanksgiving, but I don't care at all if others do. The only people that annoy me are the people that leave their lights up all year long, even if they're not lit.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having your lights up already. Why should there be a rule saying you must only put your lights up in December? Just because "society" says that is the "right" thing to do?! I say put them up when you feel like!

Re: Passed a house last nite with Christmas lights all lit up

I have noticed that xmas decorations were up and xmas songs were on the radio MUCH earlier than last year, or any prior years for that matter.

I honestly believe it has to do with the economy. So many people had a rough year and christmas puts them in a good mood - makes them forget their problems.

I found an interesting blog/article that says the same thing, but more from the POV that stores NEED to begin their christmas marketing earlier because of the recession.

If anyone is interested....

Christmas and the Recession

ETA I always loved seeing houses all lit up for Christmas when I was a kid (and still do). While it doesn't bother me, I think it does take away from the excitement when the lights are up for months instead of a few weeks. But its not hurting anyone, so whatever.

Re: Passed a house last nite with Christmas lights all lit up

My DH put our lights up last week because the weather was nice. I asked him to wait until after Thanksgiving but he was so excited to light the house that our lights have been on all week. Our daughter loves them and can't wait to turn them on when we get home at night so it doesn't bother me.

I am a firm believer that Christmas is for December only. Can't we enjoy Thanksgiving without having xmas jump the gun?
It's overkill to put them up this early IMO.

ITA. I saw a whole bunch lit up on Thanksgiving. Plus, I saw a bunch of houses with Halloween stuff up still. My poor kids were so confused Chat Icon

I love lights in palm trees! I have alot of Queen Palms and one is right in the area of my front porch. I put white lights in it every year. Also I put them in my L shaped planter my Rose bushes are in.
