Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
What is the deal with deli meats? I am dying to have a hot dog, maybe a pastrami sandwich, and a knish with mustard from Ben's.
Are hot dogs and deli meats safe? I have heard different things from different people .

I have eaten hot dogs but after reading the paper the other day about them.. im no longer eating them
Everyone has different opinions.. mostly if you feel the place is clean, some will eat. Ive only had cheese from a place this pregnancy. Last pregnancy I got chicken breast sliced and swiss cheese and heated them up before eating.

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
I haven't eaten hot dogs. There are two issues with hot dogs (nitrates and listeria). Most places don't serve the hot dogs hot enough, so if you made them at home you would have to make sure they are boiling hot.
Now about Pastrami...I actually went to Ben's the other day and did get pastrami. I asked them to make sure it was heated (that's usually the way they serve their sandwiches anyway) and I had it. I was a bit nervous but I did eat it b/c it's a heated deli meat. Also I had it at Ben's b/c it is a very busy place, but I would not have eaten it at any random place.
My DH had the hot dogs, I did not. I did have the fries at Bens (they are awesome) and we ordered a knish but I didn't really want it (yet I am sure you could eat that).
I haven't had COLD cuts (or hotdogs)however, my entire pg and will not have any cold cuts due to listeria concerns. And warm cold cut sandwiches just don't appeal to me.

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
Thanks. I know, hot dogs and cold cuts have nitrates, my mother has been warning me about this for 2 decades. I am having such a CRAVING though.
If I do eat them, I will make sure they are super hot though. Thanks.

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
before i knew i was pregnant - Dave & I went to Papaya King in the city. On their wall - they talk about their hotdogs - they are 100% MEAT - no fillers, no all of that other stuff...i'm thinking MAYBE those would be okay... Or make at home - Thumans - i believe those are 100% meat...
I didn't have one (i have IBS and hot dogs are basically direct deposit)....but Dave said they were good - and he did have to wait a minute before eating them - because they were hot!

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
I only eat nitrate free hot dogs that I cook at home, this way I know what I am eating and that it is hot enough.
I have had corned beef from Zan's - I know they cook it and everything there, plus the sandwich is heated when you get it.
Like Goobster, I haven't eaten any cold cuts COLD the entire pregnancy. I just won't take the chance with listeria. DH knows that he has to bring me a turkey sandwich to the hospital after I deliver!!

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
Thanks everyone. I actually ended up going to Ben's, buying a hot dog, and heating it up to the point I couldn't touch it. I really plan to stay away from them, they just sooooo bad for you, but I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I guess I should have some healthy alternatives available, so my cravings don't overtake me.
Thanks again for your replies.

As long as it's hot to reduce the chance of listeria, nitrates ONCE in a while aren't that harmful according to my dr. So enjoy it!

I haven't eaten pastrami, but I've had hot dogs and I've had cold cuts. Actually, we just had Subway for dinner last night.

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
If you want a hot dog or deli sandwich... Just eat it... I craved hot dogs with DS and had one almost every day and he is fine... and I would eat a sandwich once in a while... They tell you not to eat them but I still did and my son is very healthy...
If you listen to every little thing your doctor tells you not to eat you will go crazy...

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
My doctor is all about eating things in moderation - that being said, I craved hot dogs when I was pregnant with DD and I ate cold cut sandwiches often. With this pregnancy I have had cold cuts on an average of three times a week.

Oooooh. A veggie dog. I haven't had one in awhile. Some of them are very good. Any recommendations?
Thanks again everyone for the shared experiences.

Re: Pastrami, hot dogs, and pregnancy?
i'm a vegetarian, so this isn't a real problem for me, but my midwife did say not to eat cheese from the deli unless it was heated b/c the blades they cut it with usually have meat residue on them. it seems like eating everything hot is the way to go.
