Peanut allergy question
Looking for any advice on wwyd here. I found out dd has a classmate with a tree nut allergy. The cafeteria has a peanut free table so in theory I can send in pbj. Problem is she is not a very neat eater and sucks at cleaning herself up. The teacher said to let her know if she has pb and she'll make sure she's cleaned properly. It just makes me nervous. Is there protocol for making sure the classroom doesn't end up contaminated?

Our school requests no tree nut foods so I've always honored that. While peanut butter and jelly would be convenient, if it was my child with the allergy I would appreciate the understanding of other parents. It could go from hands to playground equipment etc. I wouldn't want to be responsible for something happening.

I wouldn't pack anything peanut related, I know my son could be messy even at almost 9 years old. If you child like cream cheese, you can do that with Jelly on a bagel

Peanut allergy question
I told her teacher yesterday that I would wait at least a week before sending anything. I'm sure other kids in the class are bringing pb since we weren't told not to. I only found out bc I specifically asked. I'm curious how they handle it, although I know if a child has a very serious allergy then they tell the whole class no peanut butter.
It's going to be a long year if I avoid pb. I sent a buttered bagel today with yogurt and then saw they were getting buttered bagels for breakfast. I don't really have options to send for protein other than yogurt bc she's so picky. Obviously I want all the kids to be safe though.

Ds's school is not but free. They have a nut free table for each class and then each classroom deals with allergies for snacks etc.
We if the teacher said to let her know I would do just that. They deal with this each year so I'm sure they know how to handle it.

Also - at our school in K, the TA's attend lunch with the kids and help them with whatever they need help with (shoe tying, opening things, etc). I'm sure someone will be making sure your DD is cleaned up well.
It is nice of you to be concerned though - I know many other parents would not be.

Does the friend have a tree nut or peanut allergy? you wrote treenut above so if that is the case, peanuts are safe unless the friend has both.

If I were a parent of a child with a peanut allergy, I would seriously be on edge every single day. I know that in our school, the allergy kids sit at the peanut free table, and can invite friends. But everyone else can eat PBJ and no one is making anyone wash their hands after eating. All the sharing that goes on in school and in the classroom, things getting cross contaminated, and teachers don't make the kids wash their hands. I would be scared shitless every single day.

It's the butters that tend to be an issue - almond butter, peanut butter, etc - b/c it's hard to clean off surfaces and smears. There are alternates - I've found that Wow Butter (made from soy) tastes the closest to pb, but some people like sunflower seed butter.
My child has a pn/tn allergy and yes, he sits at the table for lunch, but I'm always worried about crumbs from granola bars, pb on kid's hands, etc.

I would also imagine it depends on how severe the allergy is.
I know that some people can't even be in the room with peanuts where others it's only an issue if they eat it themselves

Tree Nut allergies include a lot of things you wouldn't necessarily think of as nuts. For instance, Coconut and Nutella

Peanut allergy question
If the child is allergic to tree nuts only, peanut butter would be fine. I think that is so awesome of you to be concerned about this other child. My son just started K today and has peanut and tree nut allergies, and I am so worried about him.

Peanut allergy question
DD has a child in her class with a tree nut and peanut allergy. She brings PB&J to school once a week. Rather than a nut "free" table at lunch, they have a "nutty" table for kids with nut products in their lunch.

Peanut allergy question
So to update we got a notice home today that there is a student with a severe tree nut allergy and severe peanut allergy. Knowing that, she won't be bringing either to school.
