Peanut Butter question
my friend took her DS to the dr. for his 12 month appointment. Her dr. told her to give her DS peanut butter immediately b/c the longer she waits, the more likely the chance of him developing an allergy. Anyone heard of this? My DS is 16 1/2 months and we haven't give him peanut butter. Our dr. said to wait until at least 18 months...one dr. said to wait til he is over 2. Thoughts?

Re: Peanut Butter question
DS is allergic to peanuts, we found out when he was 12 months old.
According to his allergist, time will not effect the allergy one way or the other.
He said England and the US are in the top 2 countries of high peanut allergy rates.
He said Israel is one of the lowest, but their children are given a "snack" at 6 months that is actually peanut based.
Dr. Weiss also said there are a lot of studies being done right now trying to figure out the missing link between the 3 countries.

Re: Peanut Butter question
I've heard that before. I gave DD peanut butter around 14 months after accidentally giving her something that was made in a factory with possible nut cross contamination and she had no reaction.

Re: Peanut Butter question
I dont' think anyone knows for sure - I read an article that said basically what your doc said, so I gave it to her at 12 months. When I told my ped I had given it to her, he was a little upset with me. He said for the record that they recommend waiting until they are 2.

Re: Peanut Butter question
My ped recommends waiting until 2 b.c peanut butter is a choking hazard not for the allergy reason. I got the impression he was okay with peanut oil etc before 2 though. I waited with DD#1 - I'm not sure what to do this time around with DD#2.

This is why I haven't given Eva PB ,but she has had products with peanut ingredients.

Same with mine.
But I want to ask my ped if she thinks iit's ok at 15 mth visit. Just some PB on toast, a very small amt. When on toast it melts so I can't see a small thin smear of it being a choking hazard?

Re: Peanut Butter question
I heard the opposite actually. Everyone always says the earlier you introduce PB the more likely your DC is to develop an allergy. I guess everyone has a different opinion. My ped said no PB until 2 years old BUT since we have NO history of food allergies in my family I may start trying it with her a little earlier.

Re: Peanut Butter question
Also wanted to add - sometimes peds want to wait on the introduction of PB not because of allergies, but because it is considered to be a choking hazard.

Re: Peanut Butter question
There are studies supporting both waiting and instroducing it early. Our pediatrician recommends waiting until 2. Our practice also recommends avoiding it while nursing, which I did for a few months, but then decided that was controversial.

Re: Peanut Butter question
my Ped said 2 years. I don't agree with it. Liam has peanut butter & jelly sandwiches once a week and is fine.
My gut tells me its good to start these things early.

Re: Peanut Butter question
My ped said 2 years. I also checked with my sister who is a ped, but she is also very laid back with my nephew and she also said no until 2 years.
I'm not willing to take any chances, so I'll be waiting.

Re: Peanut Butter question
My ped still says no peanut butter, and I am not sure if I agree with it. I keep wavering back and forth on giving it to them. I gave DS a piece of a peanut butter cookie once by accident a few months ago, do you think if there was no reaction, he is ok?

I agree with this. I think if you are going to have an allergy, you are going to have an allergy.
I gave Gianna PB a few weeks ago (she is almost 16 months) and she threw up about an hour later. Thought it was bc she was crying bc I was putting her in for a nap when she didnt want to go . But then we gave her more a few days later and she had a major rash all over her torso within an hour or so. My ped said to let it be for a few months, and try again. He said it could just be that she isn't ready for it yet. I think every ped will say something different and it makes this whole 'being a parent' thing frustrating.
