I would absolutely find the job first. When we came down for Dh interview, we looked at apartments while down, incase he got an offer (which he did) His job paid for us to come down for interview too, which worked out great cause we got to look around for a second time at no cost to us.

We are in Matthews on the cusp of Charlotte and about 25 mins from uptown Charlotte. We are renting for a year and then will decide if we love it enought to buy here. We will by in Matthews or close to. It's different. Its not NY. I grew up in Suffolk County and this is a lot slower, people for the most part are very nice, almost to nice. I had the lady in BJ's wish me a "God Bless Saturday" I just stared at her. So in that respect its different. But so far we like it. I have family down here so Im not so alone. My mom is moving here in March and DH family may take the plunge if we report good things to them.
DH is still working with his NY company which is great because uts NY pay on NC living.
Downside, find a dr that has extened hours and or Saturday appt. They all think Im crazy asking for a Sat appt. One lady said to me "Oh goodness, no we do not work on the Saturdays her ma'am"

Re: people living in NC please come in-UPDATED WITH QUESTIONS BELOW
We are seriously considering moving to NC. We would like to move to a family friendly, nice quiet area(but no too quiet KWIM?) maybe closer to a city where my DH can get a job, so he can take a bus or drive and it doesn't take him 2 hours to get there, also where they have good schools. OK SO HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS I HAVE: -What is the climate like? -What are the best and worst cities? -Is there a city/ town/area where you would absolutely NOT recommend looking for a house /buying a house? -What are the best Family oriented areas, with good schools? -Transportation -Quality of life? -Cost of living -what's there to do for fun ,with and without children -I know house are more affordable there than in NY or any surrounding states ,but how is everything else?
NAYTHING YOU CAN TELL ME WILL HELP THANK YOU

Yes it is hard! Thankfully our Pediatrician has evening hours or my DH would never get to go to an appointment.

Re: people living in NC please come in
We have been here 8 months, here is our take
-What is the climate like? Milder winter. More ice than snow, but melts quickly. Summers, no hotter/steamier than NY Actually had a spring & fall
-What are the best and worst cities? I think that's subjective. but there are some really "country" areas.
-Is there a city/ town/area where you would absolutely NOT recommend looking for a house /buying a house? again, depends on what you are looking for.
-What are the best Family oriented areas, with good schools? I would stick to the major cities - charlotte, cary/durham/raleigh, piedmont triad (high point/winston-salem/greensboro)
-Transportation I do see buses, but there is no mass transit like NY. I think most people live close to their work.
-Quality of life? Love it! We have gone to some GREAT restaurants, some nicer than ones in NY. People are very friendly, great service in restaurants, stores, supermarkets even carry your groceries out It is the bible belt, so you will get a lot of "god blesses" (and I don't mean when you sneeze).
-Cost of living Gas is a little cheaper, I got regular yesturday for $3.83. Groceries I think are about the same or a little more, but not enough to notice.
-what's there to do for fun ,with and without children My DH & I go to alot of different parks to walk and picnic. We have yet to go to the shore. we went to the mountains to the farms to get our x-mas tree, beautiful. We have yet to go to the vinyards but I hear they are nice.
-I know house are more affordable there than in NY or any surrounding states ,but how is everything else? We LOVE IT! Would Never move back! We would never have this quality of life in NY or the opportunity for me to stay home with DD.
Investigate your career, salaries can be the same and better than NY, or can be much less and compatable to the cheaper cost of living.

The climate is alot hotter than NY...The last 5 days have been over 100. We didn't get any snow last winter, either.
I wouldn't recommend, if you decide to live by Raleigh or the Research Triangle, downtown Raleigh, Wilson, Wendell....This is based on what my coworkers have told me.....You can live in a place like Cary, which is a little pricier than other towns, and it is just like LI.....Beauiful homes, too.....but mostly on smaller lots. You'll get a great "community feel". I live in a new home (not a subdivision, though) in Clayton, which is only 20 min away from Raleigh, but a much more rural area, which is what we wanted. So, you can have any type of neighborhood that you wish, and not far from the city.
We have all the stores that you would find in NY also, Saks, Trader Joes, you name it. And my fav, Starbux!!! LOL)
Unless you live in Raleigh, there is no mass transit in the surrounding towns. I've seen city buses in Raleigh, that's it. You really need to have a car in this area. And, here's a warning, the people here drive crazy -- speeding, tailgating, like I've never seen.
I can't speak for everyone else, but for us, the cost of living is drastically lower than NY. We live 20 minutes from Raleigh, have almost 3 acres, a 3,000 square foot house, and our taxes are $2,200 per year. Our car insurance for two cars (one with full coverage) is $60 per month. My salary is only 5K less than what I making in NY. My DH is making maybe 10K less. Gas is about 10 to 15 cents cheaper per gallon than NY.
The quality of life is very nice. I won't say there is no crime or anything, but on average, the people seem alot nicer and have alot more patience. Salespeople actually speak to you (and nicely, too!). Religion is huge here, alot of stores/restaurants (the mom and pop owned ones, not big ones like Walmart, etc.) are closed in Sundays. It blew my mind when I went to the deli on Sunday to get an egg sandwich and they were closed. I was like, WTH?? LOL
As far as stuff to do for fun, it would be the same stuff as on Long Island, I suppose. We have little theme parks, go-kart racing places, malls, bars, mini-golf, horseback riding, etc. I know there are places in Raleigh that have free outdoor concerts in the summer.
These are all my observations.....others will have different views, of course. I know quite a few ladies here have moved to Charlotte, which I've heard is a cool place to be as well. Much bigger city than Raleigh....
Hope this all helps!

Re: people living in NC please come in
There are mainly 2 areas.
Raleigh and Charlotte (big area for finance and banking)
I used to live MANY years in NC. By Raleigh. I am not sure by Charlotte
-What is the climate like?
Hot and humid. You do have a few snow days. And it's a mess for 1 week. It takes 2 hours to go to work when there is more than 2 inches. No kidding!!!!
The Western part is cooler. I say by Burlington and West of that.
-What are the best and worst cities?
By Raleigh. Durham has some really bad areas. Downtowns is usually not good and run down.
Depends which area you choose
-What are the best Family oriented areas, with good schools?
School vary really by towns
-Transportation
You need a car. I don't suggest taking the bus. I came from a big City and was used to train/subway. A car is a must.
-Quality of life?
Very simple life
-Cost of living
Much cheaper than NY/LI. Taxes are much cheaper even property taxes.
-what's there to do for fun ,with and without children
I was bored to death and moved to LI. I had no kids at the time though. Some subdivisions have a community pool.

Re: people living in NC please come in
I live in SC about 3 hrs away from Charlotte. Just wanted to let you know there is a heat wave going on right now. These are not "average" temps in this area. GL with your decision!

Re: people living in NC please come in
I have lived in Charlotte, North of Charlotte, now South of Charlotte. Moved here jobless, no family. Only connections were from LIF. DH found a headhunter and the rest is history.
Loved all 3.
Right now I am in Ballantyne, south charlotte. Love love love it.
-What is the climate like?
nice, we go out walking 365 days a year, unless its an all day long rain, which rarely happens.
The only time I pulled out a coat in 2 years was when we went skiing.
-What are the best and worst cities?
I don't know, different strokes for different folks. Asheville is beautiful. We would move there in a heartbeat. Wilmington is nice. Do you want ocean or mountain? That's the nice thing about Charlotte living, both are doable day trips.
-Is there a city/ town/area where you would absolutely NOT recommend looking for a house /buying a house?
Def some seedy areas of Charlotte.
-What are the best Family oriented areas, with good schools?
Love my area, I SWEAR I am busy with something everyday. Went with another mom, Leo, and our kiddies to Tag a long Tuesdays this morning for toddlers. Free admission to arts and craft museum where they made father's day crafts. We ride our bikes to the YMCA's kiddie pool. Parks, parks, and more parks. Greenways to walk. Children's musuem down the street. Free pony cart rides at shopping center. I can go on and on.
-Transportation
Everyone in my building parks there car at the train station and takes the train uptown to work.
-Quality of life?
Compared to NY...huge change. We have time to do things now. Staten Island was a sunday night ghost town. Everyone preparing for work. not here. We ride our bikes down the street to the courtyard, get frozen yogurt, listen to the live band outside, kids playing...people eating and drinking...all on a sunday night.
We ski, just went to Myrtle Beach last weekend. Strawberry picking, DH LIVES at the white water rafting center and uses all their free mountain bike trails.
NY is great to visit. We do all the touristy things now when we go back. This is just a much different way of life.
-Cost of living
I don't know how to answer...I live so differently then in ny -what's there to do for fun ,with and without children
If you are outdoorsy, its endless. We went to the caverns, the mountains, walk around asheville at different art gallaries and listen to the drum lines in the streets, hiking, biking, camping.
I have something to do with my kid almost daily. I have the zoo membership(the Columbia Zoo in SC is wonderful)...the NC zoo is nice too. Children's Museum, free things to go to all the time. Parks, the YMCA. Moms groups are HUGE down here due to the number of transplants.
-I know house are more affordable there than in NY or any surrounding states ,but how is everything else?
Sporting event tickets for super cheap, not like MSG.

Re: people living in NC please come in
here are the cons:
without family, having babies is a different ballgame.
I was taken back by the high crime rate that charlotte has.
my area is almost all transplants. DH works mainly with locals. Had his truck tire slashed Saturday night because an ex husband heard that his ex wife's new boyfriend was eating at DH's job and the new boyfriend drove a truck.
Ex did not know which truck, so all trucks in parking lot got hit.
Bible beaters all over.

Re: people living in NC please come in
before we had our son we had plans to move to Charlotte. Especially when I started my current job and found out that most of their finance functions are located in Charlotte. So I was even thinking I could get a nice relo. package. I still can now. However, i'm so torn because I can't imagine not having family around now that I have my son. I wish they would just take the plunge with us. I'm really upset about this -- i really want to go. But, most days I think it won't happen anymore unless of course my job requires me to go.

Re: people living in NC please come in
I'm in Central NC
-What is the climate like? Winters-a Joke...its cold, but nothing like NY and it barely snows...its like a dusting...they do have ice storms, but it melts by daylight. Summer- HOT and HUMID...there is no spring...it goes pretty much straight into summer.
-What are the best and worst cities? Depends where you are looking...there is a huge aray of Cities and then rural areas...all depends what you want.
-Is there a city/ town/area where you would absolutely NOT recommend looking for a house /buying a house? No, not really, again, depends on what you want.
-What are the best Family oriented areas, with good schools? Wake County has very good schools...but again...there are plenty of family oriented areas in good school districts...we live in one :)
-Transportation NO TRAFFIC!!!!!!!!!!!! I have the longest commute a whole 30 minutes and NEVER have I sat in traffic driving to work...which is during "the morning rush" -Quality of life? Its the bible belt...so people are very friendly, everyone says Hi, have a nice day, neighbors who you don't live next too will say hi and wave. Kinda scary at first, lol.
-Cost of living houses, taxes, gas is cheaper...food is about the same, sometimes more than NY, but not enough to complain about.
-what's there to do for fun ,with and without children We have gone to some nice restaurants, shopping isn't far and I'm only an 1 hr away from the outlets...plenty of stuff to do downtown. With children...we will find out in September :) But we are 45 minutes away from the Zoo, we have two children's musems closeby and a science center. Some nice parks and nature trails...mini golfing...go karts...rock wall climbing....
-I know house are more affordable there than in NY or any surrounding states ,but how is everything else? Like I said above, the only thing that i have noticed slightly more expensive is food at the supermarket.
