People who moved/moving to North Carolina?
Please tell me about it:
What area are you in?
What are the schools like?
Are there teaching jobs available?
Any other info would be appreciated.
TIA

Re: People who moved/moving to North Carolina?
We "almost" moved there 3 years ago and ended up not going ( not because of NC, it was beautiful there- we had some other issues )...
The house we had a downpayment on was in Waxhaw which is just outside Charlotte...Absolutely loved it there and ironically almost the whole development was former NY'ers ) The development was called Wesley Oaks... It was in Union County..
I can't really weigh in on teaching positions etc... but I do know that many areas of NC do not have a traditional school year like we do here ( summers off)...They go year round with many smaller breaks in between

Waxhaw, south of Charlotte
really good schools, so i have heard, my sister did her student teaching in NYC and is subbing down here, totally impressed with some schools.
Teaching jobs seem to be very hard to come by. I have a sub sleeping on my couch hoping to get a call this summer.

Re: People who moved/moving to North Carolina?
We are seriously considering a move down there. We are interested in the South Charlotte area known as Ballantyne and the areas in Union County (Marvin, Weddington, Waxhaw and Wesley Chapel).
We have researched schools and were very pleased with the high ratings the schools in these areas have received.
I heard jobs are very hard to get down there, especially teaching. I suggest trying city-data.com and searching under Charlotte to get some more info on the schools and job market down there.
We visited in May and were very impressed with the area overall, including the ammenties, the types and quality of home we could purchase, the schools, etc.

I live outside of Raleigh in Cary(Concentrated Area of Relocated Yankees ) The schools in Wake County are supposedly the best in the state. They do have track out schools(year round) but where I live is a traditional schedule. Can't help you on the teaching part. My DH and I are both in sales

Re: People who moved/moving to North Carolina?
We moved there a few years ago and moved back to NY (we regret the move back sadly).
We lived in South Charlotte. The schools there are actually pretty good. When we lived there (about 3 years ago) there was no problem getting jobs (even teaching jobs), but that may have changed with the poor economy and influx of people moving there. I almost worked as an SLP in one of the schools in Monroe and it's true, some schools do not have the summers off. Someone on here had mentioned Ballentyne and I can tell you...GREAT CHOICE!!! The houses are gorgeous and you get the biggest bang for your buck (even still...we have checked it out). The area down there is also safe. Where we were (kinda by Pineville) went a little downhill over the time we lived down there. We were looking at the Ballentyne or Matthews areas but I got home sick and insisted on moving back. The wages are less, BUT the difference between COL and wages is not as much of a gap as NY. We were able to live on 1 salary down there, whereas here we would never be able to hack it...not even on my salary alone (I make more than DH).

Re: People who moved/moving to North Carolina?
I live in Harrisburg-small town outside of Charlotte/Mecklenburg.
I don't teach but I read in the papers everyday about the most recent cutbacks so I think right now it would be tough to find a position in the area. However, that may change in a few years.
Housing is much more affordable, Harrisburg has very good schools (8s and 9s on Great Schools, and feedback from parents with school age kids is good) but unfortunately like much of the Charlotte area, Cabarrus County is up for re-zoning do to population growth so we have to hope that we continue to be zoned for good schools
