People who moved out of NYC
Did you become seriously depressed about leaving the city? It has only been one month, and I am only one hour from the city but I am not adjusting well at all!
Please tell me I am not alone

Re: People who moved out of NYC
my DH is still annoyed, angry, upset, etc etc etc. I think he just says that b/c I took him out of the city b/c he is constantly working on the yard and he is so proud of the house and his work! lol
Me on the other hand am so HAPPY i'm out of the city. When I was in the city (2 years only) I felt trapped, although I was in the same firm but in the NYC office, I was miserable at work b/c of the stress of all the "city" lawyers. Everything is so much more laid back in Long Island. I love the environment of the LI office, I love being able to drive home in 10-15 minutes, I love being able to go to the supermarket without killing my hands or freezing my hands, I love being able to go to the mall without having to deal with the dirty subway, I love being able to visit friends anytime I want b/c I'm able to drive everywhere!!!!
sorry, I can't relate to you b/c I was actually miserable in the city lol

Re: People who moved out of NYC
I moved from Queens to CT. Although at times I miss Queens, I know I did the best thing for my family. In the beginning it was very lonely. But now living here for over a year, I can truly say that it will get better. I love my new town but it is very, very quiet. No airplanes or car alarms going off every 5 minutes.
I find myself getting very pissy when I go back to visit my family. I have no patience for traffic or noise.
Give it time... It has only been a month but I'm sure feels like an eternity. It will get better...

Thanks! A lot of my family is near me so I am not too lonely which helps a bit, I just find myself trying to keep busy 24/7

Re: People who moved out of NYC
We moved from Brooklyn to Suffolk County four years ago, and I still would move back in a heartbeat if we could afford it (homes start at 750k in the areas I would want to live in). It's frustrating, b/c I grew up there, and many family members live there, but it's not affordable the way it was 20 years ago.
I miss being able to walk anywhere and having the convenience of many stores in a short distance. I miss the newsstands a lot. I also miss my neighbors who were from many different backgrounds - my landlord who made us Turkish desserts, the WW2 vet who would tell us war stories, the Indian family with their sweet kids, the Korean guy who owned a pet store and would bring us huge bags of dog food that our grocery store didn't sell (we'd buy them from him of course).
But, now that we have a child, I am glad that when it's time for him to start school we don't have to think about a decent public school and it's safe here. So, it's ok, but I do miss Bklyn at times.

Re: People who moved out of NYC
I lived in the city for about 10 yrs. and I miss it so much. Even though I'm there everyday for work, it's just not the same.
We are planning to do more city stuff this Fall. I live so close and our town is great since I can walk everywhere I have adjusted. I've been out of the city for about 5 yrs.
If we lived in the city (which we wouldn't b/c DH isn't a city person) we wouldn't have the apartment we have today. We would still be living in a studio or small 1 bedroom.
It's a trade off but it's hard not being able to walk out your door & be withing walking distance to all your favorite things!

Re: People who moved out of NYC
We moved to FL and I was miserable at first. We moved 5 months before our wedding and that kept me busy and my mind off a lot of things. Once the wedding was done I became depressed. I realized I couldnt just pick up and go somewhere (no car) and everything was a drive. I also had no one near us. I also was looking for a job and since I didnt have a car yet (didnt need one when I lived in NY) I had to share with DH which sometimes became difficult. Once I got my own car and a job I seemed to settle down. Then the holidays came around and I really got homesick.
It took almost a year for me to adjust to living in FL. I miss the accessability NYC has to offer, the diversity, the foods, my family, and my friends. But it just makes it all more enjoyable when we visit

Re: People who moved out of NYC
Funny I was just thinking about this. I lived in the city for 15 years and moved out last year when DH and I got engaged. At first it was really tough, the city was my home and it was really hard to give up my city "identity" after so many years of living there. But I must say that I feel like I have moved on; it was part of a different era of my life. Give it some time.

Re: People who moved out of NYC
We moved out of our city neighborhood in the spring and I still miss it. I love where we live and I really love being so close to my family - but I love the city so much. We were a 5 minute subway ride from Grand Central. sigh.
I know we made the right decision for us - but I do miss all that we had in our old neighborhood.

Re: People who moved out of NYC
DH and I "moved" to New Paltz when we went to college there years ago and ended up staying.
We now own a house in Newburgh and couldn't be happier.
It's so quiet and peaceful and gorgeous. I sometimes miss stores and museums etc. There's not alot to go to up here but DH loves it.
When we visit our families (bklyn and queens) we always get aggravated with traffic and rude behavior. Everything seems to move way to fast down in the city for us now.
Our good friends tell us they wish we lived down there so we could see each other more but our family is very supportive and happy we left when we had the chance.

Re: People who moved out of NYC
Sometimes. We mostly miss the convenience. Other than that no. It's been 3 years, so I guess I am used to it. If we are still in NY we plan on moving back into the city once our kids are finished with college. Hopefully, anyway!

Re: People who moved out of NYC
I can't help you b/c this is EXACTLY why we opted to keep our apt in Brooklyn and be half timers
while we are up in the house, I LOVE it. I love the yard, the trees, the VIEWS..the clean air smell...the friendliness of the neighbors.
but so far, once we have to go somewhere...the mall, out ot eat, I miss being in Brooklyn.
it's hard to find a decent non chain restaurant...especially since we've been so busy working on the house that we don't have time to look some up...the mall is CRAZY. we live very close to Crystal Run and the malls on 211 and it's so hard to remember which store is in what complex that we drive ourselves NUTS...
but then, we get back to the house and it is heaven on earth.
I am not sure if I will ever be able to give up the city life completely, but I feel very fortunate that my future children will have a life filled with both the buzz of the city, and the quite hometown feel of Scotchtown.
and if you REALLY get homesick...come over to my house. I'm bringing the Brooklyn to Orange!

Re: People who moved out of NYC
DH and I both grew up on LI - I have LOVED the city since I was a kid and we lived there for about 2 years after we got married. - He did it for me, he liked the commute to work, but that was about all .........
I was SO SO SO SO SO depressed about leaving my apartment in midtown to come back to the 'burbs of LI. I like being close to family/friends and having a bit more room ..........but other than that, I misse the city sooooooooooooo much. -
Working here isn't the same as living here. - When you work here you're rushing in and then rushing home, and when you do take the time to just hang out you have to stupid LIRR schedule hanging over your head .....it's just not the same !!

Re: People who moved out of NYC
I had a hard time adjusting. I met DH when I lived in the city and we were there for about 5 years together. It was hard moving to the NJ suburbs and having a baby so quickly, but I've learned to be thankful for the space and the air and the proximity to the city if I need it. DH still works from the city.
