pet in car situation... LONG, sorry!
ok, this is kinda long, but just so you get an idea of the whole situation. DH and i live in NJ, and yesterday we were going hiking with about 10 friends. we all met at 10 AM at a starbucks. the starbucks is in a downtown area that has a central parking lot. we had brought our dog, chester. since we weren't going to be at starbucks for long, we left him in the car while we walked over to meet our friends. it was only 10 AM, not hot out yesterday, and we left two windows down halfway. WELL, he has a seperation anxiety thing and starts HOWLING the second we leave the car. its not that he was hot or anything... just that he wanted us to stay there with him. well, we're with our friends waiting for the last couple people, and we look over in the parking lot and there is a lady standing there with her arms folded staring at the car. so DH goes over, and the lady said "somebody called the police, but it wasn't me... and i wasn't the one who put a note on your car either". there was a note on the windsheild saying " the dog must be suffering, it is 70 degrees out" so a minute later, the police show up saying they had a complaint. DH explains that he was just getting a cup of coffee, and the cop shrugs his shoulders and leaves. we're not sure how to feel about this... i mean, its great that the lady was looking out for our dog and we appreciate that. but at the same time, i think she should have taken the whole situation into consideration before calling the police. it was not a 100 degree day, and he was not in the car with the windows all closed up, they were opened at least half way. also, all of the stores in the area are ones you run in and run out of... its not like a mall where we could have been in there for hours..... what do you guys think??

Re: pet in car situation... LONG, sorry!
I have to side w. the lady ON:LY bc she didnt know it was you guys and that you were coming right back. If i saw a dog in a car i would call too bc you dont know that the owners will be 5 mins or 5 hrs.
Im SURE you love your dog and YOU know you werent putting him in harms way, but the lady and police caller didnt know that.
Dont sweat it. Just know that next time it can happen and to either wait closer to the car or take your dog w/ you.
And im sure it wasnt 70 degrees.... i hate when people exagerate
Hope you had a nice hike w/ you doggie

If it is 60-70 and sunny, it is too warm. Also, because there were 2 of you, one of you could have stayed in the car with the dog. DH and I do that a lot. I try not to leave my dog alone in the car and I never do it at this time of year.

Same here. I know you didn't mean any harm but IMHO, intentions often don't have any impact on the final result.

I agree, but that is just me. I am a little neurotic.

I'm with you on this one...Misty is in the car a lot with me. There are times I leave her in the car for a variety of reasons. As long as the car isn't in the sun and the windows are open, the dog is fine. If it were really hot, I could see someone saying something - but 70 degrees isn't super hot and the windows were open. Sorry you had a problem.

I have to agree with Wendy. I'm not sure if I read the post too fast or not, so I'm not sure I got all the facts straight, but since you know your dog has separation anxiety (my dog has it too), couldn't you have brought him with you over to Starbucks & just waited outside for your friends w/ your dog? Either way, happy the pup is okay & hope you had a good time.

I take Gus to day care, and I have to say, on our way there, or on our way home, I've been guilty of running into the post office, or into the pizza place, but never when it's hot out, and the windows are always rolled down, and if I can I park in the shade...
I think it's great that someone called the cops though, it's nice to know people are looking out for animals best interest....
As an aside...I know a guy, whose at the dog park all the time, wonderful owner, and a great trainer. Anyway, he works in construction, and he takes his dog with him to work everyday. He makes a nice bed for him in the car on rainy or cold days, and on the warm days, he lets him chill out on a bed in the shade under a tree. He plays with him on his breaks and lunch-the dog is happy as a clam and very well taken care of....now I have to say, it's also the kind of dog you can let hang out off leash and he won't take off or bark at anyone.

Re: pet in car situation... LONG, sorry!
Sorry but I would have done the same. It only takes 2 minutes for a car to become to hot for a dog.
In reality I probably would have gone into the stores for that parking lot asking who owned the dog....

I sort of agree with this.
I have read that car temperatures spike so quickly when the sun is beating on them, even for a few minutes.
It literally can become an oven or a death trap when leaving a pet or baby in teh car for even a few minutes.
I say, bring the dog out with you and take turns going to get your coffee.
I would never leave my dog in a car b/c I would be afraid of it being too hot (even with windows open) or even more, getting stolen or let out by an "onlooker".

ITA. Take turns getting coffee if two people are there. Very easy in a two person situation so best to avoid it.
Plus I have read stories of people's dogs getting stolen from the car that quickly.
