Anyone who brought their pet into my office would no longer be employed here.

And I love dogs! Just not at work!

OH, that's harsh! Chat Icon wouldn't you write them up first? Or you COULD just kick the dog AND the owner... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'd NEVER kick the dog - just the owner! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pets at work

I guess it depends on the company. Recently they had an article on Newsday about how companies are allowing workers to bring their pets so that they can stay working longer at the office if the need arises and they keep their pets in their offices. I'm a dog lover so that would not bother me but can understand how others whom might be allergic may be a problem for them. Perhaps the company should take into consideration if they have a pet policy that everyone that works there is in agreement and as long as the dog is not disruptive.

I always made sure everyone in my office (the company had about 50 people but there were 3 of us in 1 office) was OK with having the dog in there and if they said no, than the dog wasn't coming in...

I appreciate that you try to be sensitive by asking, but it puts people into a very awkward position. If I say "no, I am not ok with it", then I am the b1tch who wouldn't let you bring your dog. My DH is severely allergic to cats and dogs. He has been put into this position before and has suffered asthma attacks even when he TOLD the person he was allergic.

Absolutely it puts people in awkward positions and if shoe were on the other foot and I was in your DH's position, I'd rather come off like a biotch than putting my health at risk.... that's just me though.

I was in the office with 2 other dog owners/lovers, plus EVERYONE loves my dog Chat Icon (kidding).

In my case, the company allowed it.. the owners had their two dogs (Stanley and Sylvia Chat Icon) running around eveywhere... I don't work there anymore and my current company is dog free and in the city, so even if I could bring Cooper to work, he wouldn't like the commute and I'm sure people on the train that day wouldn't like it either Chat Icon

Re: Pets at work

When I worked in advertising, we could bring in dogs if they were quiet, trained and if the person had their own office. One lady had an awesome maltese that would follow her everywhere, he was a sweetheart. Another guy had a mutt whose back legs didn't work, so he had a cart -like a wheelchair for dogs! It did not bother me at all but then again I love animals.

This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. Did any one in this company consider the liability if some one were to be bitten or have a severe allergic reaction? This is one of the things that make youChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Pets at work

We've brought our dogs to work a couple times. It was only when hardly anyone was in the office, and it was around the holidays (super slow) and we all told the person to bring the dog in. Then I brought mine in just for a couple hours to play with the other dog. It wasn't disruptive since we weren't doing any work anyway, and everyone here owns a dog.
I think we've had 7 dogs visit, not at the same time though. But 5 different people have done it. Everyones dog is very well behaved.

I guess the boss doesn't mind, but just because there's no rule specifically banning something, that doesn't make it considerate to those you work with, especially since we work 12+ hours a day in a small space together.

I think that's ridiculous. I love my dog, but can't imagine how distracting having her at work would be...honestly, would you bring your children to work with you everyday?

There are 2 people at work who seem to like bringing their dogs in...it annoys me for one reason other than the fact that we are at work: it stinks up the office! (also, what IF one of these dogs bit someone???)

Re: Pets at work

haha. I would love it if I could bring my pals to work, that would be great!!!! I don't think the FDA would agree. I checked policy and it doesn't say anything about bringing your pets to work.

I guess I'll bring them to work tomorrowChat Icon

Re: Pets at work

I've never heard of such a thing! Believe me, I love dogs, but unless you work on a farm or in a vet's office, I don't see how that's appropriate. I am severely allergic to cats and I don't see how a business can allow animals at the office given people could be allergic, scratched, or bitten! that's just bizarre to me.

And I would be the one person, too, who would be annoyed and wanting to say something if a dog was barking all day long. I do not blame you at all. how irritating!! Chat Icon

what kind of work do you do that people are bringing their pets to work or are even allowed?

I work at a medium sized TV production company. Very casual work environment. No official policy on dogs, from what I can tell.

I was going to say, "PLEASE tell me you work at PETCO"!!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Seriously though, this is a sore issue for me. I hate it when people feel they're entitled to tote their small dogs around with them, like they're children. Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely an animal lover...but it's extremely selfish. Flame me alllllll you want, but it's extremely rude and inconsiderate of other people who MAY have extreme allergies. My father-in-law is SO allergic to animal dander that he has to carry an epi-pen with him!

Our building allows pets. A girl in my office brought her dog in, but she asked everyone first.

Re: Pets at work

Also keep in mind, I work in a very small office. There are 12 of us there now, and when we brought the dogs in there were about 4 people in the office that day.
But on a regular day or when everyone is in and working, I agree that it's not appropriate to bring them in.

Re: Pets at work

is it everyday or every now and then?

if its everyday i woulds go to your boss and complain, not go to the owner.

if its once in a while.... then live and let live.

That's a dangerous hiring policy there. I mean - can you imagine having a perfectly qualified candidate and not hiring them because they happen to have severe allergies to dogs? How do they pose this question during the interview?

Re: Pets at work

Wow, although I am all for "Bring your pet to work" day, I think if the dog is not properly trained and is disruptive then it should not be in the office. Chat Icon

If I were allowed to bring any of my dogs I would, but I would definitely NOT bring in Bruno, because he would be totally disruptive and not conducive to a business setting.
