More so since he signed his emergency decision powers earlier this yr! What a sneaky move and rarely anyone noticed it! He’s def being meticulously planning this a while!

There was nothing sneaky about it. It was public. It was all over the news and his emergency power is allowed in the NYS Constitution.

It was not all over the news. County executives and business owners are on the news today saying they were blindsided and still don’t know what the new criteria is.

They were informed at 7 pm last night on a phone call.

I'm in the minority here but that's cool.

I really wish people would just put some of this in perspective.

I feel like all I read on here is near hysterics lately.

I would understand way more if the talk were about people losing their jobs or businesses. Obviously that's a totally different story. But it's mostly about people not having a summer, vacations, not being able to shop, etc.

As a mom, I understand the school concerns. But no one knows anything yet. We need to give it a little time.

There are some posts that I would quote but then those people will get defensive and no one will get anything out of this post.

But some of the terminology and analogies... SMH.

Over 100,000 Americans died.

Literally no one ever said we'd be locked up forever.

People need to remember how much worse things can be. (Again, not talking about job/business losses.)

Exactly this. Except you're probably not in the minority. Histrionics and venom just make the silent majority find it not worth it to engage. And so what you think is the majority is just a toxic echo chamber.

The whole "two extreme sides" thing is a deliberate misconstruction. There are those who want this to be over and feel exactly as you do. Not extreme at all.

Then, there are professional victims prone to lashing out, melodrama, and extreme paranoia.

Don't buy the deliberate misframing.

Ironically, there is no 11:30 briefing today and the NY website does not have a briefing time for today.

100,000 lives were lost and that is a horrible, horrible figure.

But yesterday true number in NY was down to 74. How low does that number need to go before you feel that it would be okay to begin a phased reopening?

I’m not trying to be snarky, I’m just curious.

I have said countless times about kids suffering and starving. About businesses struggling and already closing down for good. I shared personal experiences many times and any time I post, it gets ignored or overlook. So this is definitely not true.

I don’t see many people complaining about vacations, if anything a lot of posters seems to have pools. I see a lot of people complain about the injustice for small business owners, families starving and people still not getting unemployed. Yet let’s keep everything close and lose lives to this permanent shutdown.

No one on here has discredited or ignored the 100k lives lost, but there are other people who are still here with us and their life is getting ripped apart and destroyed.

My training and education does not imbue me with the expertise to answer that question, no matter how much googling I do. But I am listening to the epidemiologists, scientists, and policy makers for whom trends, history, microbiology, statistics, modeling, etc. Are second nature. And because this is such a new, scary, world-altering event, they will likely stumble a few times. Moreover, the models are living and breathing. Society's strictness and indiscretions fuels and morphs those models constantly, so they change.

That's it. We wait to hear from those who know best.

Edited to add, LMichele, I see and appreciate that you're not trying to be snarky. To you, I say that I am not either. And don't get me wrong--I google and wish and hope and try to find the answers I want to see plenty. Because we all likely had pretty cool existences before this. But at the end of the day, I know that people have spent decades preparing for this, as best as state of the art at the moment has prepared them to. I know that whatever opening we do comes with a risk that it's lethally premature. But I also know that when we get yanked back or ordered in by people/leaders who don't want to see the economy tank or other harms, that comes from a place of expertise or education, so I accept it.

My best friend's neighbor committed suicide yesterday. He was a recovering alcoholic whose AA meetings had been cancelled due to Covid. He spiraled into a depression during the shutdown and ended his life. Yes, a lot of people died of Covid that is truly horrific. However, as many have said time and time again, other horrible things are going on because of the shutdown. Does mentioning those things make me a Drama Queen?

I just got goosebumps and teary eyed reading this. I’m so sorry for your neighbor and their family. I think people are turning a blind eye to keep their security and safety net. But it’s at the expense of many other lives.

This has turned into a political power play, and I’m glad people don’t want to sit down anymore just taking orders.

My boss was just telling me about a 13 year old who hung himself. He was pretty much a great well adjusted kid and then this hit and his family said he just spiraled. He couldn't come out of the depression that being locked up caused.
But those lives don't matter.
If this child had died of COVID he'd have been a martyr for the cause.

My best friend is an RN in the emergency dept. (not NY) and she has said the overdoses have doubled. There are so many people who are feeling hopeless.
The mental anguish will be long lasting.

My little niece had her camp cancelled (NY). She cried so hard and it breaks my heart.
I just don’t think having kids sitting idle all summer while both parents work can be good. Cause sometimes kids left alone can get into trouble.
I could care less about my cancelled Europe vacation. It really is the last thing on my mind. Keeping our businesses afloat is way more important and making sure my family is ok.

Re: Phase 2-Delayed

It's hard to remain calm when you see people you love losing the businesses they've built for years. We want small businesses open, there's nothing extreme about that. We don't want family members losing their jobs. We don't want the economy to crash. I know it's too late for some of that. I hate to see small business owners in my town closing up. Their desperate FB posts are heart breaking. What are they supposed to do?

Food pantries are running out of food. Their pleas for people to donate more because of the extreme demand should be enough to encourage you to have some compassion. We want the state reopened. It must be nice to not see or feel the effects of this shutdown. Being able to wait it out indefinitely reeks of privilege that I wish everyone had. I've donated more to food pantries these past 2 months than I have ever donated in my life. Kids (and adults) going without food, diapers, necessities.

Not to mention the mental and physical aspects. Not being able to meet with medical professionals takes a huge toll. Canceled doctors appointments for routine matters results in missed cancer diagnoses, medication issues, etc. People are having strokes and heart attacks at home because they are afraid of catching covid in the emergency room. The ends do not justify the means here. Not anymore. Go to google news and browse some of the articles, people are suffering and it's not because they caught the virus.

Yeah, we complain about things that affect us directly, like camp and vacations, but we're not blind to the other people suffering. You think it makes you a better person because you can sit inside and wait patiently. I disagree. We convey a sense of urgency because for A LOT of people, it is urgent.

Sorry for your niece! I’m also worried about my son because his summer camp is cancelled. But I know I will get, he will survive, let him go outside, it’s not a big dealChat Icon

Tbh I feel like the only time vacation was mentioned was on the “Bring things back post”, which was all the good things you would like to have. Other then people saying it sucks they cancelled their trip, I don’t see people using that as a reason to open back up.

I agree with both of you. And echo chamber is a perfect description.

Re: Phase 2-Delayed

It does seem that Cuomo is now using his power to fight for bail out money for the state.

I'm curious if everyone who is pushing for him to open and move on is ok with the ramifications of not receiving a bail out. While I don't love the idea of him holding opening as a negotiating tactic I unfortunately can see the need for it. I think our state will be in big trouble should be not get a bail out.

Eta:‘I won’t even get into the regression my son is going through at this time that is having a big effect on him. I can’t even get his appointment because they keep cancelling.

I’ll sit and wait but I’m sure I will here crickets again...,

These stories literally gives me chills too and break my heart. It is not fair. I can’t even imagine the deep pain those families must be having!

NervousNell I think that’s the same boy I mentioned before. His dad did a fb live and it was so intense and heart wrenching!
