How was it panic?
Regions were meant to reopen today, and they did not. I never said they weren't reopening, I said it was delayed. Which it was.

5 of them are at phase 2. Were some left out?

Those five were not reopening today, based on the news and articles from news sources last night at 10 pm.
If it changed today, then great. But when this post was made, those regions were specifically told that they were not reopening today.

It does seem that Cuomo is now using his power to fight for bail out money for the state.
I'm curious if everyone who is pushing for him to open and move on is ok with the ramifications of not receiving a bail out. While I don't love the idea of him holding opening as a negotiating tactic I unfortunately can see the need for it. I think our state will be in big trouble should be not get a bail out.
Agreed. This is very complex economically, as well as public healthwise. To the extent that opening means no more safety net like unemployment enhancements for the furloughed, and no bailouts/aid for the "opened," even if folks stay away, spells out arguably more financial hardship for workers and small businesses than delaying some. Things are not black and white. In any event, no one can make people spend gobs of money or rush into unsafe situations if they don't want to. Open doesn't necessarily equal financial relief. It depends on where we are as a society in terms of our understanding of the virus, trust in the economy, etc.

Yes a rumor they were not unless he changed his mind at the last minute. Too many times the media are reporting incorrect things.

It was not the media, it was from county executives based on a phone call with state executives.

Right, but the panic in this thread made it sound like they were never going into Phase 2 and the state would shut down permanently and we all should flee immediately.

Phase 2-Delayed
He just said they signed off on it - he didn't know how quickly it was going to get signed off on.
It wasn't fear about not going to phase 2 but, areas of NY state that aren't really as impacted as we are were being told it was on hold until approved was alarming.

It’s all a game to him. He doesn’t want us to reopen. Obviously if he did need a sign off these people know how to do their job and got it done in time. I am sure it pissed him off.

It's hard to remain calm when you see people you love losing the businesses they've built for years. We want small businesses open, there's nothing extreme about that. We don't want family members losing their jobs. We don't want the economy to crash. I know it's too late for some of that. I hate to see small business owners in my town closing up. Their desperate FB posts are heart breaking. What are they supposed to do?
Food pantries are running out of food. Their pleas for people to donate more because of the extreme demand should be enough to encourage you to have some compassion. We want the state reopened. It must be nice to not see or feel the effects of this shutdown. Being able to wait it out indefinitely reeks of privilege that I wish everyone had. I've donated more to food pantries these past 2 months than I have ever donated in my life. Kids (and adults) going without food, diapers, necessities.
Not to mention the mental and physical aspects. Not being able to meet with medical professionals takes a huge toll. Canceled doctors appointments for routine matters results in missed cancer diagnoses, medication issues, etc. People are having strokes and heart attacks at home because they are afraid of catching covid in the emergency room. The ends do not justify the means here. Not anymore. Go to google news and browse some of the articles, people are suffering and it's not because they caught the virus.
Yeah, we complain about things that affect us directly, like camp and vacations, but we're not blind to the other people suffering. You think it makes you a better person because you can sit inside and wait patiently. I disagree. We convey a sense of urgency because for A LOT of people, it is urgent.
This! 100% This!!
As for the 100K people who have died. Please stop using that number when talking about reopening NY. Our number is 23K.
And Im still trying to understand why I have to do curbside pick up from Old Navy but can go to Target to try on and buy clothes. Why can't these retail stores limit how many people are in their stores like Target & Wal-Mart.

It wasn't a rumor, and I guarantee he changed his tune after an outpouring of backlash and threats of some sort.

Re: Phase 2-Delayed
King cuomo had to make the announcement himself. He needed the attention. No way he would allow them to enter phase 2 without getting some attention himself. He’s a joke at this point.

Re: Phase 2-Delayed
I did not reply more quickly because I was working. So there's no need for snark about crickets.
Regarding when to open up, Seaside said it best. I don't have all the answers because it's not my area of expertise but I'll also add that we ARE opening up. Just because it's not fast enough for you that doesn't mean it's not happening. So that's one of the things I wish people would keep in perspective. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.
I never accused anyone of not caring about Covid victims. And I made it clear that the concerns of small businesses are paramount. All I asked was for some perspective. So to imply that some of us don't care about all of the other side effects of this horror show - particularly the suicide story - is a really ****** thing to say and one of the many points at which you are going to get accused of acting like a hysterical jerk.

One more thought about this in general: If you hate what Cuomo is doing so much - and I am not a fan of everything he does, don't get me wrong - take half the time you spend venting on here and call your representatives.
Yes, yes, I know people are saying there are aspects of this on which he can act unilaterally. But pressure makes a difference. And if you don't believe that, call him! Tweet at him. Donate to a food bank. Whatever. Take action.

I have been. And as someone mentioned on here....their hands are tied. There is nothing they can do to stop him.
Since it's buried in here....this is what lightblue posted...
..Just wanted to share part of what a local assemblywoman posted on her FB page. It explains why they are powerless to stop Cuomo:
I scoured the bill calendars again and again - searching for anything that even remotely moved toward getting our legislative powers back. To no avail, there is nothing on the calendar that we voted on yesterday or are voting on today that would restore our powers. Our Conference has presented a bill that would curtail the governor's emergency powers by requiring every emergency declaration to be based on a county-by-county analysis, restricting state emergency declarations to 45 days unless an extension is approved by the State Legislature, allowing county executives or the mayor of New York City to request termination of a state of emergency related to their jurisdiction, and requiring due process protections for any actions that impair fundamental constitutional rights. Because we aren’t able to bring bills to the floor for a vote, it was presented as a hostile amendment to another bill. And they voted it down. This is the ugly truth of being in the Minority in Albany. I listen to the governor’s daily campaign speech (oops, I meant press conference) and what I hear are the SAME things over and over: This virus surprised us, it came from Europe not China, we need federal money, the federal government takes from NY – so we are entitled to more, we can’t let large corporations take federal money and then lay off people, and the best one - this is not time for hyper-partisan politics (yet, at the same time, he says the nursing home catastrophe is the fault of Trump’s CDC). Maybe he should look at his own state - where he is the king of hyper-partisan politics. He does not allow the Minority parties to have the voice they are elected to have. I want desperately to help people - ALL people, not just the ones who agree with him. Now I come across this article which says he is changing the re-opening plans for those areas ready to go into phase 2 tomorrow!! (actually today)! As long as he continues his full state of emergency, he has total authority over these decisions!

Yes I did see that. If it's the "minority party" then it's obviously a Republican rep so people could check the party of their state Assemblyperson and Senators and act accordingly. If those people are Dems much of the above doesn't apply.

Unless there is an increase in new cases, it shouldn't affect it at all. You cant keep a city on covid lockdown because of protests.

Definitely think it will affect opening plans if in 2 weeks cases spike that they can trace directly to Brooklyn protesters.
