Re: photographers...question? paper
here is a DIY PVC pipe stand: DIY- backdrop stand
I personally would recommend buying one because they fold up so small. I bought one off ebay for around $80(the brand is Cowboy Studio) and its is great! I use to use a shelf I had in my dining room but I got sick of doing that fast

I would buy one like this: Stand
The rod on the top goes right thru the hollow part of the paper roll. I almost never use fabric backdrops anymore since falling in love with seamless paper last year!

Why do you need the paper? Can't you use fabric from the craft store? Just wondering for myself....this is all new to me and I am learning.

If you do it professionally, the full size muslins or fabrics are really annoying to fold and iron or steam and the paper is much smoother and also helps with glare and such. Plus, for smash cakes and other "messy" shoots, you just cut off the dirty part. It makes for a much smoother background, IMO.
Of course there are times when fabrics might be necessary, such as a scenic or patterned muslin. Still a pain in the butt to pack up and then iron out though.

Re: photographers...question? paper
Our photographer has it on a stand and I do not think it would lay right if it wasn't. Also, I think that the specialty papers are made not to bring in light from the back. With fabrics, you never know how much light will come in. However, I often fall in love with some fabrics at the store and you are giving me some ideas for using them!

can control some of the light that comes thru (if its thinner) by simply hanging a black sheet behind it, or even white - anything else to block the light. When I work with my muslins or other fabrics I ALWAYS have them doubled up for this purpose.

Re: photographers...question? paper
If you want an inexpensive way to make a backdrop fabric can work well. Muslin can be expensive and hard to keep from wrinkling. Poplin is very inexpensive and does not wrinkle easily. What I typically do with it is tape it to the wall and floor with blue painters tape. That will keep it in place and not harm the paint/varnish. I have even taped it to carpet. If DD is super active you may want to do something different like one of the DIY stands with paper or muslin.

Re: photographers...question? paper
Has anyone purchased these items (the stand and paper) at a store and not on line. If so, which store? The shipping is pretty expensive through Amazon.
TIA

They have some backgrounds at Berger Brothers. I am not sure if they are the ones that would go on a stand or how to hang them up. My husband just pointed out to me that our portable coat rack might work as a stand if I decide to try taking pictures with backdrops.
