Please explain Sabbath to me
I am so disturbed by the story of the 7 kids dying in Brooklyn b/c a hotplate wasn't turned off, and there were no working smoke detectors.
Can someone please explain why they wouldn't have been able to pull the plug on the hot plate for the safety of their family?
Obviously this was a horrible tragedy & accident, but I just can't wrap my head around being that religiously involved that you would chance a fire?

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
It's called being shomer shabbat You are not allowed to cook, operate any electrical devices etc in the strictest sense of jewish law and observance.
It's normal practice for Orthodox Jews to leave a hot plate on for all of Shabbat to warm food since cooking is prohibited.

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
You are supposed to refrain from any kind of "work" and there are many different ways the Torah defines work, one is lighting a fire. In modern times electricity was deemed the same as lighting a fire for reasons that I don't have the knowledge to explain. This is why observant Jews don't turn on the lights, drive (also interpreted as work) or turn on the stove. In order to live in modern times, automatic timers will turn on the lights (so an observant person doesn't have to flick the switch) and use the warming device, turned on before shabbat begins to heat food. All Orthodox Jews use them. I always thought of them as the same as a crockpot as per the level of electricity, not dangerous to leave on so ordinarily it's not thought of as a safety risk.

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
It is not that they accidentally left it on, the family planned to leave the hot plate on to keep the food warm over night from Friday night to Saturday night. The family would not turn on the oven to cook over the Sabbath.

Please explain Sabbath to me
They also may not handle money, ring a doorbell, or write. There are stoves/ranges and ovens with Shabbat mode that can be set ahead of time to operate automatically as needed. (My oven has this feature) The people I used to babysit for had a hot plate on a timer switch, as well as lamps etc. this was before the technology on the stove. I can't help but think that a simple timer could have prevented this tragedy. How awful and horrific for this family

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
I have a co worker that leaves the gas flame in his stove on low for the sabbath.
While I completely understand the religious reasons behind it I still find is completely unsafe

Please explain Sabbath to me
NY Hospital has an elevator that works automatically to stop on every floor on the Sabbath, so that no one has to press button to get it to move.
The shame and crime here is that the family did not have smoke detectors anywhere but the basement. If it had had them on every floor, especially the bedroom floors, their lives might have been saved.

Winthrop also has the sabbath elevator. It stops at every floor. My friend used to live in a Jewish area of Brooklyn. She said her neighbors would ask them to turn off the stove if they accidentally left it on.

LIJ NHP has one as well. I took it while leaving the NICU and didn't realize it was one until we were stopping on every floor.

The saddest thing is that if they actually had smoke detectors this would have been prevented and they all could have gotten out. They only had one, in the basement. Not on the first or second floors. By the time they woke up they were trapped.

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
I have relatives that employ a non-Jew to start the stoves for them (also called a Shabbos goy).
I cannot imagine how devastating it was - and it truly was avoidable.

I live in a very big Jewish community. We have Shabbat elevators in our building that stop on every floor going up and down during Sabbath and any holy days.
Strict observant Jews are not allowed to use electricity or work during Sabbath. The only time I have ever seen a Jew enter a non-Shabbat elevator during a holy day is Hatzolah (Jewish ambulance) and that is obviously an emergency.
My heart breaks for those kids and the parents that are left behind. So so tragic. I heard that the firefighters were out in the community giving out smoke detectors and pamphlets on fire safety.

This 100%!!!! So preventable. I don't understand why people still don't have them.
Horrible horrible tragedy. I cannot even imagine

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
After reading this, I think my in-laws do not have a fire alarm in their house. Crazy part is the amount of crazy electrical things they use is unusual. I will be finding out about alarms now.

Remember the Xmas eve fire in CT a few years ago that killed 3 children and the grandparents?! Same thing. Not one single fire/smoke detector.

If anything comes out of this horrific tragedy I hope it's the fact that people become more aware. I know the fire department was out in the neighborhood where this happened handing out smoke detectors and pamphlets.
Smoke detectors are like $10 and worth every single penny especially if you can avoid a tragedy. No one thinks it will ever happen to them until it does..so so sad

It's required by law when you build new/add an addition, etc, but after the house is done, nobody checks the house for the next 50 years, so if someone is annoyed by them, doesn't like them and takes them down, or never bothers to maintain them, it doesn't matter what the law says. I also don't know when the law was enacted, so I'm sure many houses were built before the building codes requiring smoke alarms.

I heard on the news because they were keeping with "Jewish tradition" by only have ONE. Ridiculous tradition. Let's get with the times here. Smoke detectors save lives. This tragedy disgusts me beyond belief.

Re: Please explain Sabbath to me
This story is beyond horrible; incomprehensible even. This poor father!
From what I have read; his wife is still not aware of the loss of her seven children until she gets better in the hospital. I can't even fathom once she finds out. I can't help but think she is going to blame herself for this; which is not good either.
I have never used a hot plate so I have no knowledge of how they work but aren't they plugged in? Or do they run on battery?? I know someone on here posted no electric is allowed; however, if hot plates are used; Crockpots I think would be much safer, no?
