Please give me some advice re: my 19 month old
He has Never been a good sleeper. We (mostly me) was up with him every night for 16 months. We had a great run of sleep with him in May and June and now we are back to the drawing board. Every night at 3 am he is up. The only thing he wants is a bottle of milk. We have tried to let him CIO. He'll cry for hours until he gets what he wants. Before he goes to bed around 8, I give him a banana, oatmeal or fruit then an 8oz bottle to hold him through the night. Again, this worked for May and June. Its not working anymore. I don't know what to do anymore. He won't take a water in the bottle or sippy cup in the middle of the night. I'm really at my wits end. We going to Aruba with other family members next month and I really need him to start sleeping through the night. Help!!

Have you ever tried a CD with soft lullaby music. I always play the baby einsteins CD for naptime and bedtime.

Well, here's my question, do you really think he's hungry in the middle of the night or is it a habit?

I have always played lullaby music and I think it helps because I find if I take his cd with us when we sleep elsewhere it really helps him feel at home.
From what you are giving him I don't think he should be hungry, it may just be a habit. I am a big believer in CIO (to a point), but with DS I was able to go in stay 30 seconds and leave it took only 3 nights, but then again he was younger.....8 mos old. My suggestion would be let him cry, it will be very, very hard for a few nights, but if you stick to it it should work. I Let him cry 1 minute, then went in , said nothing except time to go night-night then left, I tried to wait longer each time and after the first few I would say nothing at all, just laid him back down. Most of the time he wasn't even really crying, just moaning and making noise.
I know thats not for everyone though and not the right thing for every child. like I always say its just my opinion and you know what they say about opions......they are like a*******, everybody has one.

I think for the most part it is a habit. He's just so frustrating b/c once he gets reved up with the crying, he will NOT stop.

when you do CIO are you consistent or do you sometimes go to him? I think if you do CIO it's really important to be consistent otherwise he'll keep crying because he knows you'll eventually give in. the crying will probably escalate before it gets better, but if you're consistent after it peaks it should get better.

ITA if you are going to start it, there can be no turning back
