Please give me your opinions (ped related)
DH and I went out to dinner on Saturday evening leaving Caden with my IL's. Our new puppy was barking so they let him out to run around. He pooped behind the livingroom chair and Caden found the poop. Next thing they know Caden is covered in dog poop, his binky is in his mouth and it's smeared with puppy poop. They cleaned him and the poop up.....
We are then left to wonder whether or not Caden ingested any of the puppy's poop. To make matters worse the puppy had been diagnosed with roundworm and giardia on Monday. (he was treated with medication which he had finished)
Monday morning DH calls the ped to ask them if we should be concerned at all regarding Caden ingesting any poop. The ped basically tells (via the receptionist) us that they dont know and that we should call the vet... DH calls the vet and of course they tell us to call the ped...At that point DH calls the ped back and we are then told (via the receptionist) that we just need to wait and see if he gets sick or not...DH is flipping out that they were just not all that concerned that Caden may have eaten poop. He stops at the peds office on his way home from work b/c he wants to talk to them...They refused to see him...said they were very busy...and that they didnt have any more to offer us...
WELLLLLL.....
DH is beyond PO'd and wants us to change pediatricians....
HERE IS WHAT I NEED TO KNOW....
What would you do? Would you change pediatricians? Would you write a letter? Would you be embarrassed? PO'd at them? PO'd at DH? Would you have done the same thing? Etc Etc....
PS. Caden is fine. We spoke to another pediatrician friend of ours who basically said the same thing...Who explained things to DH and calmed him down.

I would be fuming at the way the treated you. I ubderstand that there was really not much more they could tell you but to refuse to talk to DH is wrong IMO.
Glad he's ok!!!

Edited because I misread original post. I don't think I would change doctors although I do think you should have been able to speak to a dr instead of a receptionist.

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
I would be annoyed at the way the dr. spoke through the receptionist and didn't call him/herself. The dr should have at least called back that day and listened to your concerns.
My DH would be the same way. Do they know you well at the dr.'s office? Will you feel comfortable going back there after your DH stopped in and the way they dealt with the situation?
I'm glad he's ok!

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
I wouldn't feel comfortable with my DH showing up without an appointment because he was angry.
I think a pediatrician (if yours wasn't available, another one in the practice) should have talked to you on the phone. I had a receptionist tell me it was perfectly fine to take something while I was pregnant because it was over the counter. It still didn't sit right with me so when I called back to question it, the ob/gyn said it was NOT ok.
I've gotten wait & see advice from my pediatrician too. I do think that they probably gave you the best advice they had (ON THE SECOND CALL) but had your pediatrician delivered the message himself & more professionally, it would have gone a different way. It was clearly their call - not the vets what should be done for your child. I'm sure your kid isn't the first to eat dog poop
If I liked my ped & their office staff outside of this incident, I'd stay. I'm the main one who take the kids in, so it would be my call. However, Dr. Cavanagh - aka pediatric hero - always gets on the phone to talk to me. (swoon!)

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
I would switch peds... 'call the vet' means the ped doesn't know and is too lazy to look up the diseases for you
talking through a receptionist just adds to it....

I would be pizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzed!!! I would've demanded the pediatrician get on the phone with me! I'm livid for you right now!!! EEERRRRR!
Whether or not to change ped's is your choice. Have you had any other problems with them? Do you genuinely like the ped and maybe it's just a problem with the front office (this is my problem at my OB/GYN).
DH definitely did the right thing by going down there...you definitely deserved to be treated better than that!

I *think* we go to the same ped and this for me is an ongoing problem with them. I hate when I have an issue and I get messages via the receptionist. Drives me completely insane.
You're a lot like me - you don't call unless you need to and if you really think there is an issue that needs tending to right away. We don't call over every little thing so dammit when I call........GET ON THE PHONE!!!! I must be pretty upset to call and want to talk to you.
I've dealt with it b/c frankly, I've been to 2 other peds and while I hate this aspect of their practice the good outweighs the bad. Also it depends on what doc is there......I find one is more "beyotchy" than the other.

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
i would TOTALLY change peds..sorry but, when my kid is sick, and youre his dr, and youre on call..if my kid eats flowers, poop, a squirrel for crying out loud...you WILL talk to me, cause my kid IS your job... i hate when people try to pass stuff off.. the dr TOTALLY shouldve gotten on the phone with you, and if your husband was soooo worried/aggravated/offended that he actually went there (which i give him MAJOR points for doing, most men dont care enough to do that kinda thing and leave it to us) and they STILL didnt speak to him...i woulda lost it.. totally ridiculous glad your lil one is ok!!

If it was during office hours, I wouldn't mind the pediatrician talking to me via the receptionist, but to tell you to call the vet is rather unprofessional IMO. I personally would not feel comfortable with an answer like that. Glad he is ok though, I'd be worried to death as well!

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
First I would pizzed that my ped. didnt get on the phone. My peds receptionist NEVER gives information...the ped is the only one who speaks to his patients.
Second, although your dog finished the medication be careful about teh giardia. My dogs had that when I first got them (it is VERY common) but took forever to get rid of. They were on antibiotics forever. You may want to wait awhile and see how DS's poops are but you may want to have your ped take a stool sample and run a test later on.

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
My dd didnt eat the poo.. but one day my father noticed his dogs poo had some white dots in it.. so since dd is around him and he licks her.. I called peds. They told us to get poo tested and as long as nothing showed up dd was okay. The peds said nothing they could do unless they defiantly knew the dog had a problem with worms.
FYI.. if your new pup does have worms.. make sure you dont let him lick your ds.. they can get from saliva -as per my peds.

Re: Please give me your opinions (ped related)
Well....I don't know.
If you are overall happy with this ped and this is the first (or one of the first) issues that you have had with them, then I think you should let it slide. But, if there are compounding issues, then maybe you should look for another doctor.
I love my ped, but he is close to retirement, it is hard to get an appointment and he changes them often b/c he wants to fly to California to see his grandkids, but I love him (he was my ped) and eventually we will have to change, but we deal for now.

Ummmmmm yeah, brunette MUCH better than the blond. The blond NEVER gets on the phone. I'm not a fan BUT when Jack was a baby and colicky I have to say she was amazing, really amazing. She is unfortunately notorious for not getting on the phone and has done so with me. I called the office FREAKING out b/c Ava almost bit her tongue off. I'm sorry when I'm freaking out b/c my kid has blood pouring out of her mouth you could get on the phone with me..........
And I miss Dr. P too.........

Funny story about the blond.....At most of our visits I tend to give her answers that she is unprepared for. At DS's last appointment he had a really bad diaper rash. He had had the runs for a few days and his tush was quite raw. It had begun to clear up and she asked me what I was using on his rash....When I told her that I use Maalox I thought she was going to fall off the stool she was sitting on. I said "you've never heard of putting Maalox on diaper rash? It works like a charm..." I told her to google it....

They are notorious for that.. believe me I know. Glad Caden is okay, they should have explained something to you instead of hiding behind their receptionists... like they always do.

i believe i remember this.. i used to try to get them on the dayumn phone all the time for situations like this.. i felt so bad for the parents.. lori can vouch for that.. i think we had a few long conversations about different things because the doctors were too "busy" to pick up the phone. oh and ps- they are both beyotchy.

I wouldn't switch peds but I do think that it should have been handled differently. What would it have taken for the doctor to take your call and alleviate your concerns....2 minutes? That's the part that irks me.

I was waiting for you to chime in...
I should have known back months ago..when the blond one told me that she breaks up her son's puffs that I needed to find another ped. The look on her face when I told her that Caden had London Broil the night before for dinner...I think he was 8 months old...
