Please help - Giving Tylenol and Motrin together to lower fever
DS (10 months) developec a high fever yesterday (102.8 - 103.7). Motrin was doing the trick great at first, but not now. How do you give both Tylenol and Motrin to lower fever? Can someone give me an example of how you stagger doses?
Thanks!

For something like this I would call the pediatrician. I wouldn't take medicine advice from someone who doesn't know your child. I hope he feels better.

Is he sick? Why does he have a fever? That's a pretty high fever? I would def call up your ped.
I usually alternate between tylenol and motrin.

Re: Please help - Giving Tylenol and Motrin together to lower fever
agree with calling your ped but know for a fact that you can give them both at the same time and it will be fine. HOWEVER, that having been said I don't think giving them together will reduce the fever better than just giving Motrin alone which usually works better because it is stronger I think. The reason I know is because DS always spikes high fevers and doc tells me to start with tylenol and if no reaction (decrease in temp) after an hour to go right to the motrin. So I'm not saying that you should give them both. Just that it won't harm them. Pharamcist also confirmed it was ok. But call the ped because fever might be because of an infection where you should give DC antibiotic. HTH

I took him to ped last night. She said it was just a cold. Ears are fine, so are throat and chest. She said if Motrin doesn't lower fever, I can give Tylenol two hours after Motrin. But she didn't say what to do next. First Motrin, two hours later Tylenol and then follow 4 hour schedule for Tyelenol and 6 hour schedule for Motrin?
Thanks!

Re: Please help - Giving Tylenol and Motrin together to lower fever
I have alternated tylenol and motrin for a high fever, they do not interact with each other so it will not cause an overdose. Regardless of which one you start with, usually tylenol since is not as strong as motrin, you should follow the individual time trame. So tylenol every 4-6 hours and motrin every 6-8 hours.
Example: 7am Tylenol, 9am Mortin, 12pm Tylenol, 3pm Motrin
