PLEASE help me get my toddler to sleep in his new bed...
My son has always been a great sleeper - we usually sat with him for 10 minutes in a rocking chair until he fell asleep, then put him down in his crib. He NEVER slept with DH and I. About a month ago at 20 months old, he started climbing out of his crib when we put him down, so we knew it was time to get him a toddler bed. He loves his bed to play on, however when it is time for sleep, he won't stay in it - he just keeps getting up and walking out of his room and crying for us. He will lie in it if we lay down with him, but even when he falls asleep, when we get up, he gets up. It has been so hard on us because we have had no choice but to keep him up until WE go to bed, then let him sleep with us in our bed. It's been a week and I know that it must stop, but HOW? How can we let him "cry it out" in his room without locking him in there?

I'm sorry I don't have any advice... we aren't at this point yet. I wanted to offer hugs and support. I worry about the same thing happening when we transition to toddler bed.

We put a baby gate on dd's door. She fell asleep on the floor a few times, but quickly realized she was not getting out. She was 16-17 months.

We gated the doorway. He climbed over it. We made the gate higher. He scaled it and fell over the top. My son is determined! Even if he didn't get over the gate, he can still see and hear things going on downstairs. Is it wrong to just lock his door temporarily until he gets used to going to sleep? It is SO heartbreaking hearing scream for us...

My DH had to make an extra pegboard cutout to add height to our gate temporarily because my DD was scaling the gate as well. We use a sound machine for white noise to help soothe her to sleep. You might want to get him a new stuffed animal or toy to sleep with for the transition. You can tell him "Mr Monkey" will keep you safe and sound make sure you hug him tight and close your eyes.
