Please help me get rid of the binky!
DD is almost 16 months and i want to rid her of the binky. she only uses it for naps and nighttime sleeping. yesterday she went bananas at naptime. she screams bloody murder and will not sleep. however, last night she went to bed without a peep...no binky. so i thought i made it through...then again today the nap was awful and she never slept. and tonight after one hour of trying to get her to sleep without it, i gave in how do i do it??? i want to do it now before she gets any older

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
I have NO 1st hand binky experience. Neither of my DC took to it, however according to my mom my brother was a binky addict. Her trick was to make the hole slightly larger every day. I guess it makes it not work and the child becomes bored with it. She said he eventually said it was broken and threw it away.
Good luck

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
We just got rid of it last week...tomorrow morning will be 1 week! We went cold turkey...she got up in the morning and we took it out as usual and never gave it back. DD is 28 months so we kept telling her that she didn't need them anymore and diverting her attention to something else. She hasn't really missed it too much, except at nap time. Good luck...wish I had more advice, but I just wanted to tell you that you can do it!

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
i truly believe we were done with it after last night but it is torturous for her and me. at nap time she is screaming and it is so high pitched that i cant let her cry it out. it's not crying but complete hysterics. she is normally and a child that you just put in the crib and she goes to sleep. this is tough. i wish i never used it to begin with

This is going to sound harsh, but throw them out! You can not give in if you do not have one in the house. IMO when you allow a child to cry for a while and then give in, all you do is teach them how long they have to cry to get what they want. It is hard, but you can do it. It will be tougher on you than her.

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
no advice! i'm in the same boat as you, although i haven't attempted to get rid of it yet! I think I may have missed my window of opportunity because at almost 16 months I think she's getting a little more attached to it now than before! Honestly, I'm not too concerned right now, but I know it's something I'll have to do soon. The ped was concerned right NOW. I aiming at getting rid of bottles first. We're almost halfway there. When we've accomplished that I'll try for the paci!

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
Ugh, Kar, no fun!! Poor Alex :( I obviously have no advice because Alexis still uses hers, but I DREAD the day I have to get rid of it because she is VERY addicted to it. Like other posters said, I think the best way is cold turkey. Alexis was swaddled until she was four months and I was SO nervous about stopping - I did it cold turkey and it was the BEST thing I did! The first night was HELL, the second a little bit better (but not much).....but within a week, she didn't miss it at all! Try it cold turkey - throw them out so you're not tempted.

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
DS was 18 mos when we did it a few weeks ago.
He started asking for it. He also wiped his mouth before he took a drink (even if he didn't have the binky in his mouth).
I started to ask him for it when he was playing and he gave it up.
For 2-3 nights he was up late and just crashed without it. I told them at school that we were trying to get rid of it.
It went very smoothly for us - not sure why.
I even took him to the doc on day 3, and a 3-4 hour road trip on day 7.
The only problem was last week when DS was upset at daycare and another student went to his diaper bag and gave DS his binky.
Good luck becoming free.
PS - I changed DS sheets last week and found 3 binky's under his mattress...get daddy didn't look too well when he was changing the sheets.

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
Do it NOW, whatever method you decide upon!
When DD turned 2 (two mos ago), she all of a sudden became OBSESSED with her pacis. I mean, totally obsessed. Talks about them all the time! Before this, I swear, she didn't even have a name for them. She only uses them for naps/bedtime (since she was very, very young), but I dread the day I finally have to get rid of it. It's going to be VERY emotional!
Good luck!

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
ihave no first hand eperience but this is my plan...
get your dc and make what i like to call.. a Binky Box and tell your dc that the Binky Fairy is coming to take the binkys since he/she is now a big boy/girl. Decorate the box with your child and make it fun. then that night put it under the bed (i figure the pillow would wake them) and in the morning there will be a little big boy/girl surprise waiting for them!... and get a little lovey to replace the binky! or a favorite toy!
a cousin of mine did this with bottles and it worked like a charm!
I think i remmber seeing this on a tv show where they put the binkys in the mail and sent them to the fairy and then got a gift in the mail! that could work also!
good lcuk! i know im in for it my dd is only 8 weeks old and were LOST with out her binky !

Re: Please help me get rid of the binky!
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I have the best way to do it!
When Alex was about 2 I took her paci away and I used a method I saw on Super Nanny. For a week, I talked about the "paci fairy" and how she takes paci's from big girls to give to babies who need them.
Then, one day, I made this pretty pink envelope, and on the front it said To: Paci Fairy, From: Alex. I put it in the mailbox, and walked Alex to it to find the envelope and told her the paci fairy needed her pacis to give to babies who needed them, and promised that she would leave her a gift if she gave her allll her pacis.
So, that night, she opened the envelope and plopped all her pacis into it, we walked it to the mailbox, and put it inside. The next morning, she woke up SO excited, ran out to the mailbox, opened it up and saw that the envelope was gone, and in its place was a big, wrapped gift, from the paci fairy.
The first night she cried a little... but that was it!
