Please help me with starting table food!

I am begging!

DD is 8 months (NO TEETH) and my ped wants me to start intro table food

I am so scared of choking. I don't know what size food to give her.

I dont know what kind of food to give her.

Example - tonight I made some fries with dinner. They were baked so some were mushy , some had crunchy parts. I can't give her anything crunchy , right? Bc she cant chew it, only mash it with her gums? I really am clueless about what to be giving her.

HELP!

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

have you done cheerios and puffs? Those are a great "solid" to start with and they dissolve quickly.
As far as real table food goes, try bananas, bread, chicken, pasta...

Good luck! Chat Icon

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

Like pp said, puffs are great to start with. Then anything that you can mush between your fingers. Try tiny pieces of meatballs, turkey burgers, chicken, really cooked carrots, broccoli, cheese, pancakes, moist waffles, toast (I lightly butter it.) Avocados - they don't have to be cooked. It doesn't matter that DC doesn't have any teeth, they wouldn't chew with their front teeth anyway.
DS is 10 months and I'm trying to add more table food too.

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

Start with puffs. They dissolve pretty much on their own but they learn how to use mouth to chew. Cheerios dont dissolve as easily or quickly so save those for later.

Things like sweet potato fries, small pieces of banana...anything that is soft that they can mush.

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

I don't have experience in this dept yet, but my gut instinct would be something like orzo (tiny pasta) with sauce, mashed potatoes, sweet potato, minced up meat...

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

I started with things that were soft . . . bananas, mashed sweet potato, mashed potato, eggs once the ped gave the green light (although she didn't really like them). I never gave DD puffs. She eventually moved up to meatballs and pasta. Now she has molars so she gets steak etc.

ETA: As for size . . . keep it bite size - approximately the size of your pinky nail to start with.

Gerber makes things called puffs. You can find them at just about any grocery store or Walmart and Target. They are in the baby food aisle. I had no idea what they were. But when the dr told us that DS could start having them between 7-8 months, we went searching for them.

They are the same size as a cheerio, but melt in the mouth. I know DS couldn't handle cheerios til a few months after starting puffs.

As for other foods, we tried pastina. He didn't like it. I seriously can't remember what other foods we tried when he began eating solids. Chat Icon Just cut up foods small and experiment.

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

We started with Puffs. Then moved onto yogurt melts. And then those wheel thingys. (All products made by Gerber).

Then I moved onto the breads and soft foods - wheat bread, bagel, rolls, avocado, banana, etc.

Now I am finally at the stage where I pretty much give him anything. The other night he had asparagus in soy sauce with garlic and chicken. Last night he had french fries.

As far as veggies are concerned I usually make sure they are on the mushier side. (I overcook/over steam them for him).

Jess - asparagus is not really mushy so do you just chop it up tiny and he can chew it? Does Ryan have teeth? I am just trying to think - would Katie need to have teeth to be able to eat something like that?

DS only has one tooth in the front, but he's doing pretty well with table foods. I let DS eat anything that I can mash on the roof of my mouth with my tongue. Last night he had a meatball, mashed potatoes, and spinach sauteed in garlic and olive oil and loved it. I agree with PPs about letting your DD practice chewing with puffs and cheerios first. Rotisserie chicken is another favorite since the chicken is moist and soft. We pretty much give DS anything we eat so long as I can easily mash it up or cut into really small pieces.

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

They are pretty good at mashing food with their gums.

Definitely try puffs they melt easily and will put you at ease a bit for the choking. The sweet potato ones are yummy.

Some other food dd liked at that stage.

American cheese
Avacado
Banana
Bread
Cooked potato or sweet potato
Pasta (pastina, orzo)

I vote to start puffs first!!

What I did was break them in 1/2 for a few days till he got the hang of it! After that I just gave him whole pieces. First he sort of sucked on them, then started mashing them with his gums.

Steam & chop up carrot pieces & sweet potatoes & regular potato as I am sure your DC is already eating these right?

Avocado and banana pieces are good too, nice & soft!

ETA that I waited till DS was clearly "chewing" to give him cheerios because they are much harder then the puffs.

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

I just thought of another thing DS just ate and loved! Lasagna! You may want to wait on the tomato sauce though, our ped just okayed it. But the soft pasta cut into tiny pieces with some ricotta cheese and some ground beef was great!
I'm going to try ravioli this week!

The asparagus tips came out pretty mushy believe it or not.

I noticed when I mashed foods he wouldn't touch it.

For example - avocado. First time I gave it to him I pureed it in the food processor. He hated it. I think it was the consistency. When I gave it to him in pieces he LOVED it.

I would start with the puffs/avocado/banana/string bean first. Those are pretty much already soft and if she didn't pick up on chewing and swallowed it, she won't choke.

The slowly graduate to things a little more difficult or have a little more texture. Such as bread, french fry, we did graham crackers, etc.

Then finally you should be able to move onto anything. Chicken, asparagus, peaches, etc.

You'd be surprised. Ryan has 5 teeth (6th cutting) 2 bottom with 3 top. And he doesn't actually use them to chew. He chews on the side of his mouth with his gums.

ITA! Ryan just started getting cheerios this week. I tried giving to them when I introduced the puffs and saw them coming out whole in his poop Chat Icon So I stopped until recently.

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

There are some great ideas on here already, so I can't add to that.

But I wanted to let you know that Lily didn't have teeth until she was in her 11th month, and that didn't stop her from eating. The teeth they get in first are the front ones anyway, and when you eat, how much do you use those to chew?

Re: Please help me with starting table food!

i started puffs at 7 months.

now at 9 months she JUST got her two teeth like a week ago.

At 8 months after puffs went really well we were eating chopped up soft fruit, in LARGE pieces, like anything she could pick up with her hand and hold. I have given her like 1/3 of banana to hold and she would munch away on it, some of it falls on the floor though

THen penne pasta, form inside of chicken noodle soup, not al dente, but like over cooked, she takes those large pennes and eats those.
then boiled chicken and carrots from inside of the soup, (all at 8 months)

Boiled potatoe cubes. Cheese , cold cuts, anything that was not too hard she eats, and nothing too weird, i didnt give her any super spicy or oddly flavored things.

Infants are pretty good about spitting it out and not swalloing instead, just watch them but let them explore their food.

Also, watch how your child eats, my DD would really hold the food and lick / suck/ etc before it went straight in her mouth, she was really slow about it . If your DC shoves it in their mouth then make things smaller, my DD benefited from larger objects she could hold and take her time with and feed herself.

just as an FYI, pasta has egg in it so i might wait a bit on that. plus tomato sauce is a no-no (as per my ped) because tomatoes are highly acidic.

i think everyone here gave great suggestions! definitely definitely start with puffs first. Chat Icon
