Please help! -wedding gown alterations- (UPDATE with clarification....need massive advice)
My SIL is very upset. Her dress came in and it wasn't staying up on 'the girls'. (She is very busty for a thin girl) She lost 7 pounds (which she is too small to lose) and just went in for her next fitting. The dress still won't stay up. So now they say they have to make straps.
Is that the only alternative? Has this happened to anybody? The dress fits, but they say they can't keep up the dress because her chest is pulling it down.
ETA: She has 10 weeks til the wedding. She lost the weight, thinking it would help with the situation. It's not that the dress is too big and falling off. It just seems to be altered wrong.
TIA for any advice!
----------------------------------------------------- UPDATE:
She liked the dress when she put it on as the floor sample. RK bridal told her she needed a petite and that's what they ordered. The real dress came in and the bodice is too short. It isn't even covering her boobs. She cried and said it wasn't good. They told her that maybe if she lost weight it would be okay and told her to come back in a few months. She just tried it back on today and it still doesn't cover enough boob. They convinced her that the alterations girl could do it well. (Not sure where they can make more material from, but whatever.)
She didn't plan on getting alterations there, so she left the store with the dress.
Then she brought the dress to the alterations place and they said there was nothing they could do but to add a sheer material with straps.
Can she somehow go back to RK bridal and tell them they ordered the WRONG size. The size is right, but petite is not. Does she have any chance in making this right? She hasn't been happy with it since it came in and she told them. But they told her to wait a few months and lose weight?!?!? SHE IS TINY!!!!!!!!

i got too thin before my wedding and straps were put on the night before. i was upset but honestly, it was more comfy in the end, i wasn't 'hiking' up the top all night, worked out for the best.

It's not that she lost the weight. She did it thinking it would help with the situation. She has 10 weeks until the wedding, so it seems like there should be a better way.

Re: Please help! (wedding gown alterations)
I had these tabs put into my dress to hook onto my bra. It was so I would not be pulling up on the dress all night. The tab was a hook, with wire, that we stuck into my bra.

Re: Please help! (wedding gown alterations)
Sounds sketchy. I have bigass tatas, I'm a 34F big and I wore a stapless gown for my wedding.
In my estimation, they are not altering the dress correctly. The dress should be fitted throughout the bodice and fairly snug (not tight) but snug enough that it keeps the dress up. Her boobs shouldn't really be playing a part in this, especially with "weighing her dress down."

Re: Please help! (wedding gown alterations)
I agree that they are not altering it correctly. It should be very fitted throughout the waist and rib cage to hold up the dress. They put velcro on my bra & inside of my dress so it attached and helped keep the girls in.
I would not settle for straps on my strapless gown. I might have them sew in a place to put a strap in an emergency during the reception. She should have them alter the dress again so she can have it strapless for pictures and then put the straps in for dancing.

Re: Please help! (wedding gown alterations)
That's BS. Her chest should be holding the dress up not keeping it down. They need to alter the dress to make it tighter on top. Are they refusing to do that?

Exacto! Mine was tight enough throughout the bodice that my tatas had nothing to do with the equation.

I would tell her to buy a 2nd dress as a back up just in case the first dress "accident" happens after she puts it on. She can buy one right off the rack at Davids Bridal.

I would go to RK and speak with them. I would say something along the lines of you are the expert. I relied upon your expertise and knowledge of ordering, sizing and fit to get a wedding gown that would fit me. Your sales staff recommended that I get x size. Based entirely on their recommendation I got x size. When the dress arrived, I was told to "loose weight" so the dress would fit me. I did. I am thin. It is not as if I needed to get a plus size or a larger size dress. Your staff told me to get a petite dress. I obviously needed a regular sized dress. The fact that this dress does not fit me, has nothing to do with my weight. There is not enough material here to fit my torso. That is not my fault. Your staff measured me. You need to correct your staffs error or the dress manufacturer needs to correct this mistake by sending me a new dress before my wedding. I am not going to pay for this error as it was not of my making. How are we going to make this right?
I wish your sister the best of luck. While she should not have taken the dress home as they may say it was ok and you signed off on it, I would counter with something like I wanted a second opinion on alterations. This dress is as it was when it left the store. Your staff still made the mistake. Please help me come to a mutual solution to fix it.
Good luck to her.

Kell...shady...honestly it sounds totally like their mistake. They told her to order a petite; she was planning on ordering a regular. THEY told her to lose weight & to wait...she lost weight & they tried again & its still wrong. Like you mentioned, the fitting of the dress isn't made for her body.
It may be tricky now to return it; for them to see their mistake b/c she went home w/ it.
How long has she had the dress? If nothing has been done to it; they should be able to return it. BUT I doubt they'd be able to get the dress in time for her wedding...
It just sounds like no matter what is done the dress isn't going to fit properly.
ETA: They RK need to do something to make this situation right though. Like AP said; SIL relied upon their expertise/opinion & they steered her wrong.

Has the dress been altered in any way yet ? Either way I would definitely talk to RK and explain that they were the ones who suggested petite and they were wrong (like the OP said)
If alterations were done, unfortunately they might use that as an excuse to back out of making this situation right. also the fact that she took the dress out of the store already.
Definitely try anyway, the worst that they could say is they aren't going to do anything about it. It su*ks that she is going through this though, especially because it's not her fault !!
Good luck !!

Alterations have not been done. She just tried it on again today and brought it to the alterations place. They called the alterations place about an hour later to put a hold on anything while they try to work out whatever the heck to do.

Exactly. She needs to go in and demand that they reorder the dress and fix THEIR mistake. Good luck to her. I hope it all works out.

I have a large chest-they put Velcro on my corset bra and on the dress so that it stayed up.

Along these lines, because I'm chesty and the back on my dress was very low and I was concerned it wouldn't stay up, my seamstress took pieces of boning (I think 2 on each side) and sewed it into the top line of my dress on the inside. I then "hooked" these into my coerset bra. The dress never moved!!!! It was awesome. I didn't worry about it all day!
Try another seamstress!

Re: Please help! -wedding gown alterations- (UPDATE with clarification....need massive advice)
A strapless dress should stay up on its own. If is slides, it is not fitted properly.
1) RK needs to order a regular size dress, not a petite. Rule of thumb is to order based on the largest measurement, be it boobs, waist, or hips. They should NOT have told her to lose weight to fit the dress. The dress has to fit the person, not the other way around. 2) I'm big on top (40DD) and wore a strapless. Because of my size, my dress had a more bodice coverage than the smaller sizes. My seamstress also put velcro strips on the top of my bra and on the inside of the dress. Not so much to hold up the dress, but to keep the bodice laying flat and avoid any gaping. 3) adding boning to the bodice for support may not be a good idea. The boning may show thru.
Good luck to SIL !

Re: Please help! -wedding gown alterations- (UPDATE with clarification....need massive advice)
My seamstress ended up sewing a strapless bra shaper thing into the bodice part of my gown (also strapless) because I had an issue with it sliding a bit as well. What really helped though was tightening the corsette back. Does her dress have the option of them doing that?
