PLEASE HELP!! what would you do--room related for 2 children

we have 2 kid bedrooms--one much larger with a much larger closet.

DS (1 year old) is currently in the smaller room and we use the larger one for a play/tv room. his furniture fits perfectly. it's not tiny, just smaller.

DD is coming in november so we have to start ordering furniture and getting the room set up this summer. here's where i'm stuck.

do i put DS in the bigger room because he's older and "entitled" to it? i planned on getting him "big boy" furniture (plus a crib) anyway when he was ready. that would mean DD would get the smaller room and reuse DS's furniture (we would just paint and redecorate). eventually she would get new furniture since the nursery furniture is reused furniture.

or do i give DD the larger room with the larger closet since she's a girl and will need more room even though she's younger?

DH and i are torn on what to do.Chat Icon

i dont think it really matters b/c once they are old enough to play together i am sure they will be going from room to room anyway. (so will the toys)

I am sure it will save you a lot of trouble NOT having to switch DS's room so if it were me, I would leave it.

Hey!

I could be wrong...but to me it doesn't seem the space thing would be an issue until they're much older...and being that DS is older and will be getting new big boy furniture at some point before DD, I would prob put him in the bigger room, at least for now...

It prob doesn't really matter what you guys pick, they aren't going to care or know who has the bigger room (at least for now, lol!!).

When they are older (meaning years from now) will those two rooms still be their rooms? Or is there a possibility of the downstairs serving as rooms? Just curious!

If it were me planning this right now I'd move the boy into the bigger room and use the smaller one for her nursery, at least for the next 2 years or so, they you can rethink the plan, no?

Sorry if i'm no help Chat Icon

I am putting my Chat Icon in the room with 2 closetsChat Icon If she's anything like me she will appreciate it down the road. I grew up with a massive closet and loved it. Dh grew up with a small closet and did fine.

To be fair Chat Icon closet is a double and I will get shelving etc to make it organized.

i would not move him. you are right, girls tend to have more stuff, and i think it would be better for him to stay in the room he is familiar with when the new baby comes.

I agree. Plus when my BFF had her second, her first was 15 months old, so she didn't want to further "displace" him by making him move his room as well

When my DD came along we moved my DS to a bigger room, but mainly because the closets were larger in the smaller room Chat Icon ...I will say, even though I was a shopper for DS, DD's clothes just seem to take up so much more closet space ( guessing because dresses get hung up, where as many of my DS's clothes went in dressers)...

I'd probably keep it as is Chat Icon

i plan on these being their rooms until we move (if we ever do). so it will be until they move out so i'm thinking of the long run. i know they won't know the difference now, but they will in a few years. we MAY offer DS the bigger room downstairs as a bedroom when he's in middle/high school but that's way down the road--and that's if we don't have a 3rd kid or need the space.

i just don't know what to do because i see it 2 ways. i don't mind repainting because that's easy and we were planning on getting DS new furniture anyway so that could go right into the bigger room. Chat Icon

as the mother of 2 ds and l dd i am going to say give the bigger room to your dd. Unless in the future you plan on switching. I just find my dd has always had more stuff than my boys.

DC's rooms are the same dimensions, but we put DD in the room with the bigger closet because she's a girl, even though she's younger. DS's closet has the A/C return in there, so he loses a lot of closet space.

I would put DD in the bigger room. I did that with my DD b/c her room has a bigger window as well. However, both of their rooms are pretty good in size.

DS should get the bigger room. Not because he is older but because he is getting bigger furniture.

This was originally my thinking as well (big boy furniture needing more room) but I do see the other posters points about giving DD the bigger room too!

This is what I am doing. The new baby will have the larger room because I don't want to move DS from the room he is comfortable in.

I would leave DS where he is only because if you move him you are redoing 2 rooms instead of 1.
