Please offer suggestions on cutting toddlers nails

She always hated her toe nails being cut...so I try to get one every now and then on the go. She actually enjoyed her nails being cut, but recently decided over night, no more. Everything is "I do" now and I even gave her a pair of her own but as soon as I approach with my clippers she says no and runs off. She's 17 months. I've tried food as a distraction...chocolate milk, tv...nothing works. Any suggestions?

She is a light sleeper so in her sleep is out of the question too. Now that she's outside all the time they get dirt under them and it looks gross!

Try doing it when she's in the bath. That's what we had to do for my lil' brother

funny that it was over 25 years ago but I remember it like it was yesterday.

Can you put her in front of the tv for a few minutes so she won't pay attention to what you're doing?

Hmmm didn't think about filing them...maybe she'll let me do that.

The bath I haven't tried yet. She used to sit so nicely - I hope this is just an "I do" phase.

The tv...she watches that regardless so that's a lose lose situation.

Thanks for the advice!

lol my daughter is petrified (sp?) of bugs (and I feel like a bad mommy for doing this).. but I tell her we have to get the buggies out. Her feet though are out of the question, but I manage to get the fingernails done every so often HTH

The problem with that, is that the skin is so soft in the bath, if you aren't careful, you can nick DC. Guess how I found out. Chat Icon

What I do with DD is make it a treat. I put on a funny accent and tell her we are at the beauty salon and I am giving her a manicure. I make it like a treat for her.

The other thing, is do it when she is in the high chair. That way she can't run away.

Re: Please offer suggestions on cutting toddlers nails

put a nail clipper (the small ones) on your key ring. always have it handy... this way you can do it when they fall asleep. even if it's when they fall asleep in the car.

worked wonders for me.

I cut my little sister's nails ( age 3) by giving her a manicure. I explain she can't have polish until I cut, file and lotion her. We also make a little pile of the clippings on the tissue - she enjoys seeing the collection Chat Icon

Great ideas. I will try each and every one until I can get rid of her daggers!

Kaitee hates it too. I pretend to cut mine and then she wants hers cut. She has to do EVERTHING I do so it works!

Thanks for all the advice! I tried the bath tub with success! We have two manicured hands. Her toes...that's another story she kept curling them and putting them under the water, but I'll take just the hands for now!Chat Icon
