Please Recommend Your Bank
I currently have TD bank and am so unhappy with them. I use their onlilne banking to pay our mortgage and utility bills but it takes days for them to send out the money. Then they accidentally deposited someone elses $1,400 in my account I thought DH deposited it and I ended up spending it only to find out that 1 month later they deducted it from my account. When I inquired about it they simply just apologized but it left me short that month.
Now DH deposited cash into the atm last night today I check my account and I was overdrafted by $2.00. I called the bank they said when you deposit $ into the atm its treated like a check so it hadn't cleared when another transaction was debited from my account. They charged me $35 for a $2.00 overdraft! I thought that was alot
I previously had chase and their online banking was great but my only problem was everytime I looked there was a new fee on my account like a $12 maintance fee, then a $3 view check fee. I hear now they've gotten rid of those fees. Please help

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
What bank is your mortgage thru ?
Sometimes your bank will offer benefits if you hold your mortgage there.
My mortgage is thru chase, so I have most fees/account balance requirements waived.
I'm loving Chase so far....

I also have Capital One and so far so good. I love the fact that branches are popping up everywhere.
They also have the highest Savings rate that I know of for local banks (1.55% for balances over 5000).

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
We just left TD for the same reason - we each keep a small personal checking account because we pay our own car payments out of it and some other small stuff, but keep the bulk of the money in the joint accounts.
Well then we found out - the hard way - that if you dropped below $100 they charge $35!! That was just ridiculous and did not work for our needs so we switched to Chase.
Our accounts - I am told - have none of these fees as long as we set up direct deposit from our paychecks or keep a certain balance (but we don't have to do both) so we have our DD into our personal accounts and then keep a higher balance obviously in the joint account.
This is our first month using the online bill pay features though so I will let you know!

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
I use Teacher's Federal Credit Union as our main acct. We also have an acct w/ TD Bank but I am using it less and less. I liked them much better as Commerce.
No fees at Teacher's. Easy online banking. No problems ever!

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
I use CitiBank and I have never had any problems with them. My mortgage is also through them.
I would suggest going with the Bank you have your mortgage through.

Ditto. Absolutely hated TD Commerce. Convenience yes, but for a hefty price.
eta : I also have joint accounts at Sovereign with my Dad and have no problems with them.

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
We have Chase. They're great. Haven't had a problem so far. They are so many branches and atms. They haven't charged us for using a debit card at stores that i can see. I also have my credit card with them. i like that when i sign on, i see my credit card account and my checking.
I used to be with Roslyn (new York community banks) and hated them. They had no locations near where we moved. They charged me 1.50 to use a debit card at stores. And took 3 dollars a month because i had 300.00 in my savings account. that was the minumum i was told, but then it magically went up to 500.00 (i only had this account to keep my checking I use an HSBC direct account for my actually savings at the time.)

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
I really like chase. since DH's check is deposited directly into the account, there are no fees. All the checks are electronic- so you don't have to pay for that.... scans of them come up automatically when they clear. I use their online bill pay for about 95% of the bills and have never once had a problem with them- most major companies are a 1-day pay.
I have a chase credit card that is linked to the checking acct as a line of overdraft credit- it's $10 to pull money from the CC to the Checking Acct but it's cheaper than the overdraft fees when it does happen- and they automatically pull enough over to cover whatever comes in. I don't have to use this feature often (maybe 2 or 3 times a year) but it is nice to not have to worry.

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
ING direct has a great online checking account but you have to have an external account to link it to b/c the bank is only online. But whenever I use the debit card they take the money out right away. Its great - very easy to manage your money
they also don't charge overdraft they give u a $135 overdraft line of credit so the few times I have overdrawn I've only had to pay interest on the amount I withdrew - which came out to like 30 cents or something...

Re: Please Recommend Your Bank
Our joint account is through TD. I'm not the biggest fan and want to switch to Bank of America since I've had such a good experience with them. I've had Bank of America for years. They pay my online bills much faster than TD. The only reason we are with TD is because DH's job only allowed direct deposit into the NEFCU and TD at one time. He is too lazy to change everything over now. Honestly the only benefit is their hours.
As with all banks, depositing cash through an ATM will come up as a check so it's not the banks fault. It's all in that stuff that gets mailed to us. I would see if they would reverse the fees for you because you made a cash deposit though.
Our mortgage is through Chase and they are offering some great account stuff, but I'm hesitant with them because they fuckked DH with his CC so we just rather not give them the business.
Other than that DH has a checking and savings through NEFCU and I have a savings through there. The only thing with credit unions is that you need to have an immediate family member that has an account there for you to open one. Plus they don't have the best after hours service you might need. There were times when DH tried to purchase high priced items with his debit and it was declined because they don't allow over a certain amount in a purchase and then when you call there is no one to talk too.
