This happened to me and ended up being false labor. If you can stick out the pain, it is not labor. You couild just be having mild contractions.
When it is real labor, you WILL know 
Thats not 100% true....Real labor doesnt start out with excruciating pain for all....
Everyones different, Labors are never the same, we need to remember this when telling others our experiences....
How are you feeling now?? Did you call the Dr.?

It sounds like the start of labor to me. You are 36 weeks? If so you are term.
I agree with Donna and Barb. It could be labor. I didn't have excrutiating pain with Nate. I started having the type of pains you described for 2-3 hour stretches. Then 2 days later they continued for 4 hours and 7-8 mins apart. That's when when I knew it was labor.
