Please tell me my school district is not the only one
starting the week BEFORE Labor Day!!!
Yep, I had a vacation planned for that last week in August and now we can't go because I just found out we start the Thursday before. And what makes it even more infuriating is that when I went to the Kindergarten Orientation in June, the Principal said that there will be a Kindergarten Playdate on August 29th and that the teacher assignments will be given out that day. She said that if we know that we will be on vacation that last week of August to tell her in advance and they will mail the assignments home to us. She said nothing about school STARTING that week!!!
Several people have told me not to cancel my plans and to just have DD start the following Tuesday, but I just can't let her not start on the first day! So now we have no summer vacation.

Where I work, the teachers report to school before Labor Day but the children do not. There have been a few years though where we all started before Labor Day.

DH has definitely started before labor day some years ... doesn't your district post the calendar for the next 2 years on their website? If not, that's annoying!

No. This year's calendar was posted in March. But because I have no other children in the school, I really didn't know to check. I guess I just assumed that they've always gone back after the holiday so this year would be the same. I know, I shouldn't assume, but... And I know teachers often have to go in the week before, but not usually the students. And they're giving us an extra day before Christmas and Passover that most other districts don't have. I'd rather go those 2 days and have off until after Labor Day. AND, I'd think the principal would have mentioned it back in June.
But now that my DD is officially going to be in school, I'll be on top of it, and will voice my opinion at the school board meetings too!

Calendars are usually not approved until about January/december before.

I'm surprised that they are starting that early this year. The last couple of years had conflicts with Labor Day and the Jewish Holidays, but this year doesn't seem to be impacted. You may be getting a long winter holiday break.
As for your vacation - go! My mom said that she was once in the same position (we were returning home on the first day of school). My sister started the second day as did a new student and they became best friends!
