Poll: For those homeowners, did you start off with a starter home, or right away move into a forever home?
I'm just curious how many of you got a starter home as soon as you could afford a down payment, and how many waited for your first home so that you could buy your dream home.
Feel free to post advice on what worked for you.

Other.
Started off with a "starter home", but decided to add an addition to it to make it into our "forever" (or at least until DC go to college) home.

We are looking for our forever home. With the pices in the Tri-State area the way they are (even in a buyers market), I'd rather spend my money on my forever home. Plus they forecast prices only coming down more, so I am not sure investing in a high-priced starter home would pay off in the long run ....

This is what we're planning on doing as well. We bought a "starter home" that can eventually be converted into a "forever home".

We were looking into both and ended up buying a starter home. It's a townhome and it was a foreclosure so we couldn't pass up the deal! We've been renovating it and plan to stay here for a while, but would eventually like a house.

we never really decided on what kind of house we were going to look for before we started looking... we kinda just left it open to see what we could find and we ended up finidng a forever home!

our house could be considered either. it's bigger than a starter house, but isn't our dream house so i don't know if it's our "forever" home

Other. I wouldn't say it is our starter home, but "forever" is a long time. It is our home, and I guess we will see where life brings us!

We didn't plan it, but it could be a forever home. I hope to upgrade some day, but DH could live here forever!

we started out looking for a starter home because that was our budget. We were very fortunate to find a total fixer that was much larger than anything else in our budget & we could easily live here forever. I don't imagine ever selling this house but we will likely live further east in the next several years.

We are considering our new home as a starter house, but there is room to expand and dormer, so it could potentially be a forever house.

DH and I are in our 40s and have a 13 month old son. We could afford a forever home, so we weren't interested in buying a starter home and going through the whole process all over again in several years.

We bought something kind of in the middle. We plan on it being our starter home but if we needed to, we could stay forever. LOL We have 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.

We bought a co-op in Bayside because that's what we could afford. Saved up for some years and recently sold and bought a house. Not sure yet if this is our forever house. We got a nice cape. We went with this house bc we can very easily turn it into a forever house with some renovations.

We went for a condo in Holbrook because we wanted to own something without the greater costs and responsibilites of a house. We're looking to stay for 5 to 10 years.

My 1st home was supposed to be a forever home, but too bad the guy wasn't a forever guy.
This next home I didn't look at either way; it was a roof over our heads, comfortable and fitted our needs. At this point, I don't give anything a "forever" labeling or shelf-life.

Re: Poll: For those homeowners, did you start off with a starter home, or right away move into a forever home?
Our first house was our starter home. We could have stayed forever in the home but didn't love the location and school district. We sold the house and bought our forever home. We lived in our starter home for 3 years before selling for an amazing profit. No regrets.

This is our forever home. It has everything I want for now. And if we need more room, we will expand.
It took a long time to find this house, I don't want to go through that again!

Our house is a starter. We plan to move to the suburbs when the kids are school-aged.
