Re: Poll: For those homeowners, did you start off with a starter home, or right away move into a forever home?
I don't think there is a house out there that could be a forever house for us...we are working on our 3rd house and it will be long term, but we don't see it for longer than 20 years.

Other...I consider this a starter home, but it can easily be a forever home, too. (just not mine ).

We bought our house with full intentions of doing a full knock down to turn into forever home.

I consider our house a starter home.....we'll most likely live there for about 10 yrs then move to something else. Probably bigger or in a nicer area, etc.

Re: Poll: For those homeowners, did you start off with a starter home, or right away move into a forever home?
We have a Levitt house. It could be considered either.
At this point we decided that we will stay put. I think remodeling our house is better for us. We love the location we are in. Considering that we would have to pay for closing cost, movers, etc.. it's actually cheaper for us to remodel our house.
It's not our "dream" house.
But a lot of people now are "converting" their starter home into their "forever" home.

I think for many our house would/could be a "forever" home. However, we plan (god willing) to have too many children to fit here so we don't intend for it to be our forever home.

We moved into our forever house.
But, we were in our mid 30s and DH already had 2 kids. We needed the room.

The home we are buying is about 1600 sq ft which my REA said is a forever home, but we plan on trading up in 7-10 years. I figure we can get something bigger and hopefully make some money as well !

I really hope it's just a starter home! That was the original plan.

We bought something kind of in the middle. We plan on it being our starter home but if we needed to, we could stay forever. LOL We have 4 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms.
same here.... life happens. perhaps I am a pessimist, but what if one of us passed, or lost a job, or became ill... who knows. We wanted a house that could get us through whatever. is it my dream house, no, but it is a good, solid house...yes. also, when you're broke like we were, we couldn't afford a "forever" home.

We didn't plan it, but it could be a forever home. I hope to upgrade some day, but DH could live here forever!
Same with us.

We bought what we both want to be our forever home. It has plenty of potential. We knew when we started looking that we'd be here for a while.
PS - I don't plan on ever moving again, after moving 3 times in the last 3 years.

We bought a starter home with potential to be a forever home. If we can't afford a bigger nicer place place we'll renovate our current because it's on a large piece of land.

Other.
Started off with a "starter home", but decided to add an addition to it to make it into our "forever" (or at least until DC go to college) home.
This is what we're planning on doing as well. We bought a "starter home" that can eventually be converted into a "forever home".
same here. We bought a POS fixer which is a starter home (3BR/2 full Baths). The house is on a lake so the location is great, the house needed a lot of work and still does.

We waited to buy something that we loved and I think this is our forever home but who knows- maybe down the road we would decide to move again!

Not sure-90% that this is our forever home. The house is solid and with a cape there are some many possibilties. We would love to dormer out then entire second floor and extend over the garage..this would give us a lot more room.

We bought a house that can be our forever home. We already had DD when we found our home, but we knew we did not want to buy something that we would know going into it that we would NEED to move at some point. Our house is roomy enough now and has possibilities for expansion.

We're in our starter home. It's a nice two family -- in a couple of years we will probably upgrade.

Re: Poll: For those homeowners, did you start off with a starter home, or right away move into a forever home?
we're on our second house. our first house was a "Starter" house that we planned to add on to to make it a "forever" house. it was a small rancher with a lot of land, and we had planned to add a second floor when we had kids, etc. we were happy there. BUT then FILs job got transferred and they had to move.. so we decided to buy their house from them. it was a chance to own a bigger house without having to do an addition, AND its in a better neighborhood. so, i think this will be our "forever" ( or at least for a long time) house!

Re: Poll: For those homeowners, did you start off with a starter home, or right away move into a forever home?
We are skipping the starter house- we are moving OOS - and plan on buying a fairly large home with everything I want
but if I have the chance to upgrade to a house on the water- then I would love to do that in the future (it's not what I want now but I know it's something my DH would like in the future- with the boat in the back yard)
but I am looking for my "dream" house- or the house with potenial to be my dream house
