I think that now that it was voted down, there will be some back-door politics going on plus loads of tax incentives for Wang to revitalize with his own money.

Between all of the businesses and families moving off of Long Island - we can't afford to lose this arena. Mangano knows it, Wang knows it.

I'm not surprised. Maybe the local governments should start being honest with its constituents and stop thinking that we are all stupid.

Anyone with a single brain cell can see that the "estimates" are overly optimistic. First, the estimated "tax revenue" was based, in part, on the Islanders being in 6 playoff series within that 10 year period but the current franchise has only made it into the playoff twice in the last 17 years. Next, does anyone really believe it will only cost $400 million? When all is said and done, it will probably cost more than $1B out of the taxpayers pockets. So, that is just a few examples of (1) how it won't generate the revenue it promises and (2) how it will cost more than the government says. Costing more coupled with generating less money are two big reasons that it deserved to be voted down. However, since I believe this vote was a farce, it will probably still get built and we taxpayers will continue to bled out without any say whatsoever.

YES YES YES. I dont have the heart to look at the results.

This is an important infrastructure fix. It will bring (and more importantly) KEEP jobs in Nassau caounty, as well as keep a structure that makes money and pays taxes top the county.

I think our taxes would go up something like $38 bucks.

Im all for it to keep and make jobs!

So sad that it was voted down for these reasons...unfortunately I'm not a Nassau County resident so could not vote.

I can't even express my disgust in tax payer voter apathy in this vote. All many people heard was "Raise taxes for Hockey Stadium" without understanding the big picture.

As far as I'm concerned, if taxpayers didn't bother to educate themselves as best as possible on this matter to vote, then don't complain about Nassau County's fiscal crisis. You had your chance to express your opinion and in this situation the votes would have made all the difference.

Even if the vote swayed away from what I had voted for, I would respect that but this election was NOT a reasonable vote of Nassau County IMO.

Very disspointed it didn't pass. Taxes would have gone up regardless.

This comment posted in Newsday today sums it up pretty well:

"I simply love how brain dead the residents of Nassau County are, especially the ones who are posting on this forum. Your taxes were being raised yes, but by a small figure that would have paid for a new arena that YOU the TAXPAYER would have owened. Not Mr. Wang and the islanders, you could have used it for events, conventions, graduations you name it. Now thanks to you being short sighted you have pretty much sealed your fate because when the Islanders leave and the arena loses all the events to the new arena being built in Brooklyn who are you going to blame then? Are you going to blame the "crooked" and "corrupt" politicians as you have so incorrectly labeled them? Knowing Nassua county you probably will. You can't make money without infastructure expenses and investments and guess what you lost the biggest thing you had left in Nassau, this will be almost as bad as when Grumman shutdown most of its operations.

For those of you saying Wang should fund it cause he is a billionare, News flash HE TRIED IT ALREADY, you let your Town supervisor kill that deal. Then he pretty much agrees to one of the most tax payer friendly lease deals ever and you hose him again because you cant afford a WORST CASE, not what it would have been but the worst case forecast of $58 a year. Can't wait to see your taxes atleast double that after you lose that revenue stream.

It wasn't just about a hockey team it was about laying the foundation in Nassau for a new development hub with potential to bring in much more jobs, revenue and class but like usual Nassau County residents have found a way to ruin a good thing. "

I just love how everyone thinks that because some people did not vote yes, that they are misinformed or just narrow minded.

Ditto. Everyone understands that in some circumstances, internal investments are necessary for financial improvement. However, when a county is in the economic crapper that Nassau currently is, laying out $400million+ doesn't sounds like a prudent endeavor.

I think this is exactly what will happen and why people did not vote yes.

And I did not vote yes because I didn't educate myself on this issue. I voted no because I DID educate myself on this issue.

Sports teams have been there, done that using tax payers money to build stadiums and the like boasting about all the jobs and revenue it would bring and in many cases it was a big fail just like in Seattle.

not that it really matters.. but i wanted to point out about the islanders and the playoff thing, they can't get big time hockey stars to play here because of the POS stadium we have and the surrounding area.. they wanted to sign many guys but they will take less money to play somewhere else.. its really terrible.
i am so disappointed by the vote.. and not just because im an islalnder fan, but it would have been great for Nassau and bring in money. and now our taxes will just go up anyways ... what a shameChat Icon
