Pool - would you rather it closer to your home, or further away?

Thinking ahead. Eventually want to put in a pool.

What do you think is better, having a pool closer to your home or further away (esp when you have a child)? One senario the pool could be visible from my main rooms. The other senario if I place it somewhere in my yard, I would not be able to see it from my main rooms/kitchen.

Anyone have any insight to pool placements?

Also do you think a pool close to the home is bad for resale?

Further away.. we had ours in the back corner of the yard (that way, we could still enjoy the outside without stepping foot outside and being right in the pool and the kids could go to their play area without it being a disruption...

I think it depends on the distance you are talking about. Yes, if it was like an acre and at the end - then that would be too far to see from the house.

However, a short distance wouldnt be bad from the house. You def want to make sure you can see or hear the kids in the pool when you are inside the house.

In our childhood house the pool was close to the house. However, it was more towards the bottom...so you couldnt see really the entire pool from the kitchen but it was close enough that you could hear if anyone was yelling for you. You could see the entire pool from the den, family room area.

I dont think a pool's location would hurt your resale value. I think it general a pool can either help or hurt you. A lot of people will not buy a house b/.c of a pool....( the upkeep, cost of maintenace, they think its dangerous)...etc.

We have a pool outside at our new house, that is fairly close to the house, and viewable from every room facing the back - with young kids in our home, and in the neighborhood, I do prefer to be able to view the pool from the back of the house.

The further away, the better.

Be aware that some towns have restrictions on how far from your property line it needs to be as well...

also you may want to think about where you have the most sun too because that helps keept the temp closer

i say mid way away- ours is very close to the house now and really could not have a fence between the patio and pool and so it made us look for different (ie expensive) way to make the pool safe- we have the power cover

the pool growing up was after a large deck and it had its own patio within the fence - it was very nice - and then a large yard on the other side - but that was a little more than .5 acre property - it was nice because it was enclosed well

Re: Pool - would you rather it closer to your home, or further away?

Our pool is set in the back of our property. I love where it is since we just ran a fence across the back in between the yard and the pool. I like that the kids can go in the back and play in the yard without being anywhere near the pool.

Growing up our pool was right out the back door and my mom was always a nervous wreck since there was no real way to fence it in.

ours is in the back corner and I like it, b/c the kids can go out to play in the yard and the pool is not in the way. The way it's set up, it looks like we just have a big open yard.

Our first summer here I thought it was too far away during a heat wave Chat Icon but I got over that quickly.

Re: Pool - would you rather it closer to your home, or further away?

Our pool started to get out in today!

We have a rectangular backyard. So the sides of our house have as much room as does the depth to the back fence in the back. We also have 2 back door sliders - One from the kitchen, the other from a family room. The kitchen slider leads to a flat patio. The family room slider to a deck.
We chose to have our pool installed closer to our house which is off of the flat patio and closer to our kitchen. We did this for a few reasons.

1- It's the sunniest part of the yard.
2- We are tying in our current cement patio with all new pavers that will also go around the pool. We want one cohesive area. We are also putting a pergola over this area.
3- We are putting estate fencing from our deck to the back fence so that it splits the yard in half. One side is the pool area, the other side is the grass and play area for the kids.

We tried to plan with our kids in mind (safety wise - fencing, gates, alarms and dead bolts), but also keeping in mind that they won't be young forever, and wanted something that would look nice later on.
