Popcorn Ceiling
Popcorn ceilings used to be a dealbreaker for us when looking at houses - but it looks like we might have to give in to popcorn ceilings
We aren't looking at old houses, we are looking at fairly new construction so I don't even know why builders still do them - I guess b/c it is cheap and quick? This is in Florida so maybe it is a Florida thing?
Did anyone ever remove a popcorn ceiling themselves? I know it can be done, but with over 2,000 square feet I rather have a pro do it - I'm wondering if it is expensive? I am guessing they'd have to remove the popcorn finish and do a new finish...

Re: Popcorn Ceiling
we did it ourselves for our townhouse about 5 years ago.
It was about 1000 sq feet, but the entire upstairs was cathedral ceilings!
It was a PITA, but we did it ourselves (I think we were quoted $1500-2000). It's pretty easy to do...just messy and your arms get VERY tired (although we also moved 1000 sq feet of tile that day too).
I had a 2 gallons sprayer and filled with hot water. DH would come behind (after the waters soaked), with a special tool with a grocery bag attached and scrape it off the ceiling.
It took us a weekend, but we were doing other things as well.

yeah i heard if it was never painted it is easy to get down once it is wet - but i heard its messy and can take awhile....
what did your ceiling look like after you removed all of the popcorn finish? was it just flat like the rest of the walls?
i would want some kind of finish on the ceilings - something to hide the imperfections....my mom's ceiling in florida has a nice finish but i forget what it is called....
i wonder if we could remove all of the popcorn ourselves and then just have a contractor come in to re-finish it....that might save money....of course that would only be if we ended up with a place that had a popcorn ceiling....

Re: Popcorn Ceiling
In our old townhouse we had it removed in out LR. We had someone come do it and they said it was easier to just replace the whole ceiling so that's what they did. It's very messy! If you're buying a house and can remove it before your stuff is in that would be ideal.

Re: Popcorn Ceiling
I just had someone do this last week. They sprayed it with wate then used a spackle knife to scrape it - messy clean up but the ceiling are in pretty good shape considering it was up there since 1960!

Re: Popcorn Ceiling
My hubby and his friend removed it from our entire condo. Used a spackle knife. Its messy and tiring but worth it.

Re: Popcorn Ceiling
the ceilings were a little imperfect after...all of the upstairs was cathedral, so you couldn't tell and the downstairs had radiant heat (this was in CA), so just painted the ceiling with a color.
these are the best pictures I have to show (sorry they are shutterfly - they are from a long time ago)

scraping (I don't have a picture of the tool - just the spatula for the edges)

I'm not sure if this is before or after the paint?
