Re: Popcorn ceiling removal?

You can just cover them with a thin sheetrock, even better than scraping them.

Re: Popcorn ceiling removal?

We removed ours when we lived in So Cal. Our townhouse was built the year before asbestos was banned, but we checked with the HOA anyway.

In CA, it was banned in 76 or 77, so if your house was built after that, it shouldn't be a problem.

I'm not sure when it was banned in NY (1989 in the US)

I wonder if there is a way that you can get it tested and then you can do it yourself. Otherwise you have to call a haz-mat company that specializes in asbestos removal.

I had no idea that the stuff was abestos!! I thought that it was just stuff they put in the paint. How would I know if the house was built with it or if it was something the homeowner did? we only have 1 room with it and I want it gone. I figured DH could just do it, but now you have me scared. my home was built in 69

the house we just bought was built in 1969. I contacted a Contractor to see how much it cost to have tested and removed. Theres no quarantee it has asbestos but if it was put up in the 1970s or before mose likely does have asbestos. We may also just get tested ourselves. Theres a environmental lab in Holbrook that tests samples. Were going to scratch a piece off put in zip lock and bring there. Supposely free that way but well see.

we considered that idea but I was afraid if fire hazard. Plus thinking I want to put a ceiling fan so would need to be removed to do so.

Can i ask how that would be a fire hazard? And why can't you just install the ceiling fan after the sheetrock is installed?

The popcorn ceiling would still need to be cut to put fan in place. If contains asbestos then cutting would put fibers into the air. the fire hazard part thought with the wires under so many layers could possible a danger. Im no contractor just a worrier lol.. so no clue if that would be a fire hazard or not.

I am no expert but people sheetrock over sheetrock, plaster, etc all the time. I dont "think" that would be a fire hazard at all. Cutting into the ceiling of course would release dust, if asbestos was in it then yes it would contain asbestos. I can see your point with this.

I'm not an expert on this but I think if you covered it with sheetrock that would be better than removing it

If you cut a little piece out to remove the fan, I think you will be okay it's not going to kill you. I think having it removed will be more dangerous and release more of it into the air, they will have to seal off the other rooms in the house etc and it's going to cost a ton of money...

Not clear on why it would be a fire hazard thoughChat Icon

You can use a stud finder to find out where they are. Also, you want to screw the sheetrock to the studs. If you use nails, they can "pop" and they will stick out from the stud. You won't have that happen with screws.

my advice is spend some good money on a stud finder, don't get a cheapo - they don't work!

You can also use a strong magnet. It will stick to the nail/screw heads. Depending on what's in the ceiling, sometimes this could be more accurate.

Also, since you are covering the existing ceiling, you can poke holes in the ceiling to do a "probe test" of where the studs are, just to verify what you find with the stud finder/magnet/tapping on the ceiling.
