Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
so, MIL says both her kids were trained by 1, so we are going to start with Luce.
I need to buy him a potty. He can sit obviously unassisted but still has balance issues.
early trainers, what did/do you use? my mil says "they don't make them like they used to" (not sure if she was talking about potty's or babies though )
thanks!

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
I think your MIL might be exagerrating a bit
I have never seen a "baby" that young potty trained. i have heard of the random story here and there, but you realize what goes into potty training right? They need to be able to physically control the muscles needed to pee/poop....at that stage its not always possible, as well understand the concept of wet and dry.
Lots of luck if you try. I would say just get the largest potty possible..

my MIL doesn't exaggerate. that's just not her style. though she was not born in this country, so her methods and experiences are very different.
that being said, maybe it won't happen for my son. but if she wants to try and is with him all day, I'll give her the leave to do so.
thanks for the recommendation. I'll look for the largest potty possilb.e

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
I don't think Donna meant anything offensive. It's def. hard to believe And, honestly, something I wouldn't want to rush. Diapers aren't awesome, but it's part of being a baby
That said, Ryan is not potty trained, but did start using the potty on the early side (but not at a year). The first time he peed on the potty was on his 18-month birthday. Since then, he goes 1-4x/day on the potty. But when we try underpants - he doesn't seem ready (even after this weekend after a nap when I found him in his room taking down his shorts and putting 2 legs in 1 hole of his ming ming underpants )
We have the Baby Bjorn potty. And I do put Colin on it here and there when I'm trying to make a point to Ryan He looks utterly confused and if he actually peed in it, it would certainly just be coincidence.
I honestly don't think the potty makes a difference. There's nothing really special about any one of them - it's a plastic bowl
Good luck!

I'd look for one with a high back to help him sit better.
My ds has digestive issues and sometimes has a hard time going, he likes handles to hold onto when he's pushing.
ETA: I don't think it's so crazy, in other countries babies are PT'd much faster than in the US.

thanks. yes, the one she described using had a high back and handles to hold on. of course, this is 35 years ago so things are different now.
maybe I'll have my FIL bring me one from Central America. they still use the rack for interrogations down there too

I wasn't offended. it was just an off the mark assessment. and I love my MIL so I wanted to set it straight. I didn't need the explanation either, but that is neither here nor there.
I am sure for most people it IS hard to believe. b/c it isn't done. that doesn't mean it can't be.
I have no idea how she's going to do it or what it entails, but there is not harm in getting him used to the idea, I would think.
I just want a potty.

Agreed...I actually did a 30 page paper on this for an advanced early childhood psych class, and the average age of PT'ing is getting older in the Us...And other countries do train earlier ...at around 2 years. the difference is a 12 month old vs 18 months old brain in understanding is HUGE.
i don't wanna argue anything and really do believe to each their own, but my own opinion is its almost not fair for lack of a better word to a baby that small to try to teach them something their body's are not capable of doing. Why the rush, let babies be babies.
But since this wasnt the question asked, nor my opinion going to make a difference , I'll justr say Good luck again.

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
I have a Fisher Pirce Potty - it looks like a toilet.
I put it in my bathroom and Sean sits on it - but I don't think he's too interested yet -
At 15 months he does know (and tells me) Pee Pee and Poopie in his diaper - so I'm thinking MAYBE I can potty train him early ..........
Just b/c it's not normally done, doesn't mean it can't be done.
Good Luck !! Can your MIL come to my house ??

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
we have the three part toilet seat for our guest bathroom - it is a regular toilet seat with a middle piece that lifts up and down for training - have not used yet because we are not done with construction yet
but my son is 10 months and he has pooped 3 out of 4 days on the regular potty - i call it mommy trained potty using - my son usually poops when he sits after breastfeedin - instead of putting him in the exsaucer to poop i hold him on the potty - he goes in less than 2 minutes and it is easier to clean than a poopy diaper
i just want to keep him used to using the potty no real rush to take it further - but it helps keep the cloth diapers nice

in your choice to do that to your baby,
if he ever needs a therapists couch b/c of what I choose to do to him, I'll send him your way
I would not do anything detrimental to my son. neither would my MIL. I appreciate that perhaps you may have studied psychology and childhood development (I am not aware of your credentials so forgive me) but there are other opinions out there that are just as strong as yours in favor of it.
to the general audience, I don't want this discussion or thread to get out of hand. I asked for a potty. if you have a recommendation, GREAT.
but I'd like to keep the arm chair Freud out of it.
merci.

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
HEY- WHY NOT?
You MIL can only try and it's obviouls she is experienced. One of 2 things will happen.
You have a potty trianed Luce. Luce needs more time. no harm in either.
I used the portable looking one- the little bucket in the seat.
eta: I started early too.

Re: Potty trainers, especially early trainers, recommend your potty
We were all trained really early, as well. My grandmother trained 6 grandchildren all by the age of 18 months, most much younger and she swore by the potty seat that went right on the toilet. She would hold us all there. I still have memories of her holding my 6 month old cousin on the potty and her pooping and thinking my grandmother was crazy, but sure as can be, my cousin was out of diapers by a year old! So, you could do the straight on the toilet thing, but when we started Ava at a year, we just got her a plain little potty that was from Target. I like the really simple ones from Ikea, too.

I think you took my posts a little too much to heart.
My opinion was actually not that strong b/c like I said you wouldnt take it anywhere anyhow...so calm down with the snarkiness...
I wasn't trying to dissuade you , or put you down so much as point out that developmentally ( and your Pediatrician would be the right one to confirm this with) a child that young is not ready to potty train....
Do as you please... as we all do ....and remember that you get all kinds of responses to posts on a public forum, including differing opinions even when a reccomendation was all that was asked for...., so you don't have to point out others agree with you, there was not a doubt in my mind they wouldn't
I was pointing out that ...should you choose to anyway, well woo hoo...let us know how it turns out.

We started potty training with DS around 19-20 months and he was fully trained by 23 month. We did not use a potty we used a potty seat. I did not want something else to clean. Worked great for us!

I have to agree, my mother trained me and I was fully trained by a year. She is from Europe, she seems to think that "americans train too late"
with that being said, we started with Chels recently and I don't like the potty we have, I heard great recommendations on the safety 1st one that is a floor potty but also has the cushion seat that makes the seat not too hard for them to sit on, and you can take it off the potty and use it on the actual toilet when you get to that point...
