Interesting, but that's just silly for a 1 year old to try to use. Part of potty training is for them to independently go, and if they need you to put them up on the toilet every single time it really defeats the purpose.
Potty training shouldn't be something that takes months. People say they started at 18 months and were trained by 24 months. That is just too long. If they are ready it's something they pick up in a couple of weeks.
Good luck with it though and I would stick to something that goes on the floor. There is an abundance of potty seats in the stores, I would go check them out.

I knew this thread would spark some interest - for some godforsaken reason, people seem to take pottytraining so personally!  I've heard of early pottytraining - it's not common here, but it is in other Countries, and there is a movement in the US for baby pottytraining. Our neighbor's third daughter was fully pottytrained by 18 months. Alex initated pottytraining, against my will, at 18 months.
I see nothing wrong with it - my only issue is that life isn't nearly as easy when you have a kid who is pottytrained - forget long trips in the car!

My friend read this book in which you train them in 3 days. You have to stay home for 3 days (make no plans) its not about putting them on the toilet and waiting, its about having them have accidents and realizing they are wet. They e not to use diapers (the are actually told to have DC throw them out) and they must wear underwear. It worked for her son. He was having some issues with #2 but #1 is not a problem at all.
I dont know the name of the book though. someone on here might
eta: I just asked my friend and she said it was a FWD email. She is sending it to me if anyone would like it let me know.

I think it depends on the child. My son was definitely mentally ready to potty train. He would tell us before he went and hated to be wet. Emotionally he took longer because he was scared of the potty and didn't understand it. I think each child trains at their own pace. I definitely think it is possible to do it early but I think that each child will do it when they are ready

we never used a potty, just the seat that you put on the potty since the other concept grossed me out (having to clean it out...ugh ) and I think it helped dd quite a bit that way!

I don't think I took it "personally" ..I was just a bit shocked anyone would consider potty training their 9 month old baby based on what I knew about it.
but...as always different strokes for different folks.

this post made me laugh.
josh tattled on me yesterday to dh...telling him i put jessie on the potty. I wasn't telling anyone, people already think i am nutty...but in 3 weeks solids enter into her little cloth diapered body and i don't know what to expect then
so, only after nursing, i know she will pee within 3-5 minutes...i put her on potty and she goes.
she doesn't care, i don't even think she realizes, but it is about 3-4 less diapers a day i am using.
your mil sounds incredible. most caregivers would not take such the time.
as far as potties go, we never came across one he would sit on...so he trained standing up on a stool.

My former boss is Chinese, and his MIL and mother had his kids (boy and girl) trained by 1. The girl was trained by 9 months, boy by 1. So, its possible and very common in other countries (both his mother and MIL were born in China).
As far as a potty is concerned, I can ask him if you like what they used. Want me to do that?

we have this one by Fisher Price and after being on our 3rd potty this is the best one out there, IMO. So far, what I have found is the fancier they try to be, the more they s*ck. We have one (i think its by safety first) where the hole isnt large enough so he ends up pooping on the seat. Some dont "guard" for boys, others with removable seats, if the aim isnt dead on, then pee gets all inside the toilet.
This one.....large enough hole, great guard action for boys, no pee leaking all over.

My mom had my sister and I potty trained by 18 months. She isn't Thomas' primary caregiver, but she first put him on the potty at 13 months. He's been peeing and pooping on the potty since 13 months. He always seemed to get it and knew what to do when he was put on the potty, HOWEVER, he was not actually "potty trained" until two months shy of his 3rd birthday. He would always go when brought to the potty, but he would still go in his diaper/pull up in between being brought to the potty. I don't think it hurts to try to potty train early. If it works, it works, if it doesn't, it doesn't... no harm done. I feel it was easier when Thomas was ready close to 3 because he was already familiar with the potty.
Anyway, your question was about the potty... My mom used potty seat on the regular toilet. I did too for Thomas. I use an Elmo soft, cushiony seat. I didn't want to clean the extra mess of a separate potty and I didn't want another transition.

My friend just recommended the Ikea potty...she said it worked great...but she has a girl so it may or may not make a difference.
I honestly can't fathom potty training DS, I can't even get him to go to sleep this days.

I'm a huge fan of the inserts because
(1) they are smaller
(2) it's one less transition to make later to the big potty.
If you are looking for a potty for the floor, I'd stay away from the Bjorn. It looks great as a potty but you are better off with something that can be used as step stool to the big potty later on.
I won't bother naming the other ones we had as I'm sure styles may have changed since I was last in charge of potty training.
As for the potty training debate, I worked in an orphanage in Mexico & the little ones (yes 1 yos too)were all trained to go on command. But they all had their own little metal buckets. I assume you're looking for something more fancy for the Little Prince.

this post made me laugh too
as well as started to make me think I need to start figuring out this whole potty thing and how and when to start...DD is 12 months
With that being said I was potty trained by 15 months....by a 2 1/2 year old!
My mom was trying to potty train my brother who is 15 months older then me...he turned around put me on the potty and that was it...I was trained!
Him on the other hand took a few more months

Yep, my sister, now 6, had a "bucket" and was trained around a year in her orphanage. When my mom got her home at 16 months and a friend gifted her a personalized beach pail, poor thing ran screaming, "no ca-ca"

DD was not an early trainer (she was 3) but I used a stool and a potty seat like the one pictured above.
In general, I think there is a HUGE difference between being potty trained and elimination communication. Not saying that EC is bad but I personally do not consider a child actually potty trained until they can go into the bathroom and go by themselves, wipe etc.
For instance, if we are out and about DD will tell me she has to go and then we go to the bathroom. I just cannot imagine a 12 month old communicating all that but hey great if they can
My mom claims my brother was potty trained at 1 yr but she also claims I started talking at 5 months. I just think her memory is getting fuzzy

no help in the type of potty...just agreeing that is seems like ppl from other countries are more into early training. my family (eastern european)does early training also..like by 2 (im a first gen).
my mom said i was potty trained by 1 but i also was walking at 9 months so i dont know if thats related. she said she just kept me out of diapers (which i think might have been cloth) and on the seat a lot.
there's no harm in trying, right???

I was trained before I turned 1, I know it was a big deal because my parents and I had to leave our original country while we had permission to come to this one. And I was 1 when we all left. I was also an early walker.
I think cloth diapers had something to do with it, too. My mom was too much of a prude to keep me out of diapers though.

We have this one too. Also might I add my DS started potty training at 12 months after reading this Infant Training
I have to say it worked great for us. He is going to be three and is fully potty trained. Also just a few suggestions....
*Be consistent if she is starting it make sure you stick to it too.
*Pull ups are just a diaper at that age nothing more nothing less, so either do diapers or underwear.
*Get a travel potty for the trips as well. We got one at BRU that (I think Eddiesmommy) recommended and we love it.
I find it weird that we use so much of the European influence when it comes to our babies (for example the tomee tipee bottles) but can't believe that this is something that has been going on for years in other countries.
